Cars and Perceived Value

So, I have a BMW X5 which I thought was the Bees Knees.
Powerful, comfortable, luxurious

When in Durban recently I had a Hyundai i20 and before that a Toyota Starlet
Both ugly as sh.t BUT both had softer suspensions over potholes specifically in Comparison and light steering etc

Sure the interior is basic and no comparison to a BMW for example BUT I found myself less tired on long drives in both small cars and it was so effortless and comfortable to drive.

Im totally rethinking how I see cars.

I have a Sportscar and that makes sense cos it's a totally different experience

But beyond the height of the X5 and Brand / false status, I'm re-thinking how I think about cars now.

Been there. I used to keep a car for only about 2 years and it had to be the best, hence since I got my licence in 1977, I've owned 33 cars. Currently, my 4 year old Duster is my go to car. Wife drives the Merc. I seem to be happier with the cheapie. More practical too. Another thing, I've lost my appetite to replace cars often. It is paid for, reliable, cheap and effective, and that is now important, not the image or anything else, just practicality.

Relieve to hear that it's not just me.
Dont get me wrong, I do NOT enjoy driving my older Nissan but these days with newer cars, the Brands like Toyota and now Hyundai ive learnt, offer alot of Value

Just dont understand why Toyotas costs as much as they do nowadays. They used to be known for cheap and reliable
 
If I can get cruise control, adaptive would be nicer on a car like the i20 or Starlet, I would be very happy

It's more the low profile tyres Beeeee Em put on most X5's they sell. Crap ride on those.

Definitely.
My car has an optional set of 19s (35 profile)
I had an issue with bearing noise which the dealership thought was a buckled rim.
They then fitted the standard 18s with 40 profile and even that small difference made the ride quality a lot smoother.

Mostly profile and handling of the car. They trying to make suvs handle like sport cats. I drove my brother's discovery 3 and it was sublime on the long road. We have a tiguan with 19s and its fine. But not as floaty. The tiguan with 20s are known to be much harsher. But comparatively, the tiguan feels like a rolls after my clio
 
There are only 2 factors to blame

1. Bad roads.

2. Low profile run flat tyres.

Chances are there is nothing wrong with your x5, rather it has the wrong tyres on for the SA road conditions.

okay so this is next for me I guess, 18s with 40 profile, dont know what it means but I gather it means a much softer ride.
