CAT 6/ 7 Where to get 100m

I assume cat 6 is good quality and should be ok for home?

Quality is more of a brand/manufacturing thing than which CAT standard you buy.

CAT 5a is more flexible then CAT 6 and CAT 7 the least so if you are installing in tight conduit 6 or 5a is better.
5a can do 1Gbps at 100m if installed correctly so should be good speed wise.

Then make sure you get proper copper and not CCA (copper clad aluminium). CCA can work but just save yourself the hastle and pay the extra.

I bought two cat6 boxes a couple of years back from geewiz and wired up my house.

They were quality and properly shielded when you cut them open.

Can’t speak for the current batch, but I haven’t had any issues in years.

As stated they do bend a more difficult so had to plan my routes properly.

CCA is often labelled as solid too - that's more the solid core vs stranded (for flyleads) I think. There's alot of nonsense going around with cable these days.

@marine1 here you go:
I'd go with Cat6

And bear in mind it's different outer sheath (usually black) for outdoor UV friendly cable.

Also, if you're in a high thunderstorm area and you're running cable outside, you'll want FTP or STP (shielded cable) with shielded plugs and network switches with shielded sockets (easily confirmed - the socket has steel around it)

Unshielded sockets:

Completely agree that stock sucks in SA. You should be able to easily find Cat 6, 6a and 7. 6a over 7 if you can get it IMO - 7 is very rigid by comparison and 6a supports 10Gbps over 100m. 6 supports 10Gbps over 50m so if your runs are 50m or less, 6 is fine.
So this would be first prize:

Now what connectors work with this cable? Because as I understand it, you need proper Cat 6a connectors also

@MTIRAWCP

Please don't get CCA (Copper-Clad Aluminium) cable. It sucks and does not even meet standard.

Sorry you are right so I definitely want to go cat6a but cant seem to find 6a connectors that are shielded

Can you maybe direct me ?
Have you ever installed Cat6? It's a pain compared to Cat5e and likely won't make any difference.

Doing Cat6a will give the installation legs. When 10Gbps is commonplace he won't have to replace all that cable.

When 10Gbps is commonplace everyone will be running fibre on long runs.
Might even be cheaper to do already with the copper pricing shooting up.

Why am I so fking stupid and impulsive.
So I got the pure copper cat 6a F/FTP cable.
Great.
Then I needed connectors so I got them too.
Well this ain't gonna be easy because they are not pass through.
So I then already paid and left.
After asking Chatgpt about this it seems you have to be an expert to do this.
So I find CAT6A RJ45 Shielded Toolless Connector at geewiz.....have to wait for order. Hopefully tomorrow.
Why the fk didn't i just go with standard cat 6? Now I have 150m of this bloody stuff. Always making impulsive bloody decisions. :mad:
I speak to my guy who does my networking and cameras and he says no man its easy. I am like yeah thats what yiu say about everything
