Hi All

What a damn rip - paying close on R30 per kilogram - with 2 large indoor cats, can sometimes end up costing more than their monthly food bill! :mad:
Any idea where in the Western Cape one can source cheaper silicone/silica litter? Would also be open to buying larger 10/20kilogram bags.

If you're looking for standard clay-based litter, you can get a 40kg bag of it at Perky Pets for around R 60. Doesn't last very long as we have 8 cats (yeah I know, lol) but it's good value.
 
For industrial silica you can buy from Protea Chemicals , 50KG @ +-R150 you can choose the coarseness of the grain too. I'm no sure if its appropriate for cats, but will be very clean etc etc.
Best to test with a cat first :)
 
yea, also using the silica cat litter for our cats... the cats are peeing us outa the house!...
 
You are right, that stuff is indeed pricey. I live in an apartment and you can only use this stuff to get rid of the smell even with constant cleaning. I only have 1 small cat, so 1 big value bag lasts for 3-4 weeks, no need for me to complain. However, if I could get it cheaper...
 
You want ‘clumping’ cat litter. This has that nappy stuff mixed-in than gells a baby’s pee. Then you clean the lumps out and there is no dreadful ammonia smell and the litter lasts. It lasts even longer if the cats go outside to pee.

Thanks for the all the inputs - definite food for thought!

I am now using the very fine silica would imo is working well - the clumping nature of it is signifcantly better than the more coarse silica. Does definitely last longer.

It is indeed much better than the coarse stuff but my cat makes a bigger mess with the fine one.
 
My gf with her dogs moved in with me a couple of months ago and now my cat refuses to go outside. Granted, the cat is bigger than both dogs combined, so dont know why he doesn't want to go outside. I did the kitty litter thing for a month but now I want him to go outside again as the litter is kark expensive. At the moment it is all out war between my cat and I. I punish him every time I catch him doing his business inside the house and then I throw him outside. In retaliation he'll try to pee on everything while I'm not watching. Carpets/couches/clothing, even took a dump on me while I was sleeping. I'm on the verge of giving in and buying the litter again.
