Hello people

so gave my car for service and my mechanic says that i need to decat the car

something along the lines of the cat is being blocked and therefore steam is being built up in the engine.

Now is this common and true ?

and how much is it to decat a car ?

Not sure if it's common but decat it anyway, not sure how much it will cost, decat plus 76mm downpipe was R2500 for me a few years ago but will probably be cheaper for just the decat

If it's at higher mileage quite common. These things start going anywhere from 150,000km and it will cost a more if it kills other things especially on a turbo car.

Also a new cat is stupidly expensive so nobody does that.

Being a VW it should be reasonably cheap as in <R2000 as they simply cut it out and fit a new mid pipe while keeping the sensors in place so it doesn't throw a fault.

Should give you some better fuel economy too.

you will love the better performance with no cat

Sometimes happens and a new Catalytic converter is insane price (thing has some platinum in it go figure).
Cost - el cheapo - don't get ripped off! go to any place that does exhausts (supa quick kwik fit etc) all they do is cut the cat (its normally in the middle or more towards the back of the car) and weld a regular piece of exhaust pipe in its place. as long as the weld is done correctly (no holes) you will be ok, Performance and Sound is increased so slightly it's hardly noticable.
or can go all crazy and replace your whole exhaust system but honestly it's a waste i nothing else's is an issue then no point.

Of course you will be adding a little more pollution back in to the air

It should be a very cheap and fast job at any exhaust workshop.

Should be a couple of hundred bucks, they literally cut the cat out and replace it with regular exhaust, nine years ago I did it on my Astra and it was like R100 back then.

they remove the cat and replace with a exhaust pipe. Depending on ear model you might get a engine light that can be mapped out, or for about 250 fit a minicat that fools the ecu
