Hello All,

After spending the last while researching CCENT/CCNA Certification, I have decided that I will use the following study material for the ICND1:

CCENT/CCNA ICND1 Official Exam Certification Guide from Wendell Odom
CBT Nuggets (friend's employer has access to this, which they are letting me use, yay!)
Boson Kit for CCENT and CCNA Certifications (expensive but covers both exams)
Cisco CCENT Mind Share Game

Of course I am not only using the abovementioned items, but they will form the core of my "study library".

Comments/suggestions welcome! :)

the CBT nuggets are brilliant, try get hold of packet tracer aswell, the tests do have little scenarios where there are simulations, its nice to get through them quick . and to be honest thats all i used. best bit of studying i have ever done, it really filled in the gaps when it comes to networking things

As far as I understand, you need to have a Cisco Academy login to downoad PT?. Reason I am going for such a comprehensive library, is that I want to pass first time, so am trying to cover as many bases as possible, don't mind if I have more than enough material/info.

Cisco Press do a number of very good books ( Cisco -- so should be -- they wrote the book :D )

Have a look on the Cisco Press website ( you can download a catalogue )

Have a look at Wendell Odom's BLOG on I think Network World -- VERY good

Have a look at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University PE -- they are the Africa centre for the Cisco Network Academy Programme.

I am taking a slightly different approach looking at the long term -- I am building up a LAB ( Cisco / Server / SUN / DEC / DELL / LINUX / BSD / PC ) covering most of the bases :)

I am currently busy looking at obtaining all the Lab exercises for CCNA / CCNP

I have NEVER seen any Cisco Press books on the "used-market" in SA -- in the USA you can acquire Cisco Press books for about US$3 -- US$5

Here in SA there is a COMPLETE monopoly on IT books

Funnily, didn't even think to look for "used" Cisco books here, same reasons as yours. Ordered the ICND1 book via Exclusives, just takes awhile to get here. There are probably no Cisco books on the used market here, as they are expensive to acquire in the first place, so people rather hold on them. I guess.

That is quite a LAB you are building, still debating wheter to build a home LAB, if I can get the Cisco equipment without selling a kidney or two!.

Honestly you should check out the CBT Nuggets. The trainer Jeremy has a really good way of teaching, and if you don't know of never done routing/subnetting etc I can imagine it being very difficult to learn from a book.

This was all I used to pass (1st time). CBT Nugget, packet Tracer, GNS3 (not really necessary for CCNA IMO) and then do some lab tests on http://9tut.net/

IF you do decide , let me know -- I might be able to save you a kidney // or arm // or leg

Have Nuggets, yay! :D

Watched the Intro Video, think I look forward to the series. Also watched the welcome video, that guy needs oil for his chair! :D

However, I have to watch them in a VM that I have running XP, Linux doesn't play nicely with them.

IF you do decide , let me know -- I might be able to save you a kidney // or arm // or leg

Thanks, will keep that in mind. The Nuggets guys suggested 851w (saw one on Ebay for about R1,800 incl. shipping... ) or 2514, Odom has a number of suggestions depending on budget, and I have seen various others as well. Must still see about the home lab, but as I plan on going further than CCNA, it might be an option. The decision is still pending in that regard (home lab, that is).

I have the pdf's versions of
1)CCNA Self-Study- Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices (ICND)
2)CCNA Self-Study- Introduction to Cisco Networking Technologies (INTRO)
3)CCNA INTRO Exam Certification Guide (CCNA Self-Study)
4)CCNA Practical Studies
5)CCNA Portable Command Guide

If you want them, PM me.

I'm not sure of the rules on the forums - but I have a couple of 2500 routers, 2900 and 1900 switches that I want to sell. Was thinking of putting them on bid or buy, but if people are interested pm me.
If this is against the rules, please delete the post.
Cheers

I actually have a 1700 series router and a 24 port layer 3 switch (Linksys). PM me if you're interrested. You can have the lot for R 2k (It's a steal :D)

Thanks for the offer, but have decided to go with simulators for the time being. Once I have my CCNA, will look at at real-life lab, will also use packetlife for access to the real thing, but availability there is at a premium.
