CCMA to hear Telkom case
04/08/2004 17:15 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Workers have taken Telkom to the Commission for Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) to avert looming retrenchments in the company, the Solidarity said on Wednesday.
Solidarity said the first meeting between the unions - Solidarity and the South African Communications Union - and Telkom would be held on Friday and chaired by an independent commissioner, Afzal Mosam, at the CCMA offices in Johannesburg.
"The thought that more than 4 100 Telkom workers are due to lose their jobs over the next three years speaks volumes about Telkom's social accountability," said Solidarity spokesperson Danie de Wet.
"If Telkom is unwilling to shoulder its responsibilities the trade union will compel the company to do so."
De Wet said Telkom was bent on carrying out the retrenchments and was not interested in saving jobs.
He said the company had told the unions that by August 31 dismissals would have been completed and the first 1 381 workers would vacate their jobs.
