Hi, would love some definitive answers on this subject. I tested a CCTV system running 16 cameras and monitoring it over a LAN. The bandwidth usage in high quality is 200 MB per minute so this will not be an option. Low quality uses 25 MB per minute. It needs to be monitored 24 hours per day from another PC using ADSL. Any ideas what package would work with this high usage? I assume only a 1MB/s ADSL line from Telkom would work - or would I need more than one? One problem I can think of is the upload from the PC doing the monitoring. Any good ideas would be VERY highly appreciated. Thanks

Well 25MB/min = +- 426kbps so 512-1024 will be fine. However make sure the uplink to the internet can handle it.

Not a chance ;) A 4Mbps line will give you 30MB/min - theoretically. Realistically closer to 25MB/min can be expected.

BUT... ADSL is asynchronous and the 4Mbps is only achieved in one direction. So a 4Mbps ADSL line would be fine for the side that is monitoring/receiving the video. However you would need to bond at least 6 ADSL lines in order to get a high enough upload rate at the side where all the cameras are.

Your best bet for this kind of setup will be some kind of dedicated metro-net service.

Thanks

Thanks for that. It makes perfect sense but the costs involved here are huge. 6 x uplink ADSL lines will be R2400 for telkom, and then ISP uncapped unshaped accounts at about R1500 each !!!! That's over 10k a month !!!! Scary stuff. Thanks a lot so far

Was cctv techie back in the day, did all the bells and whistles.

512kb/s was sufficient, but video was 4fps, which i suppose was industry standard for remote viewing. Ur software will upload as best the connection can permit. For all intents and purposes the above is sufficient (unless you installin for a casino or bank). Hq remote viewing is overrated imo, ur viewers just need to make out what is happening and if quality footage is needed ur onsite installation can provide.

not an option. 65km distance in hills, valleys and mountains. site is deep in mpumalanga.

just checked metro link, they are not in these areas and am sure they never will be. these are 3 tiny towns in the a$$ end of mpumalanga

Don't you also need a dedicated IP address on the server side? That will be an additional expense for ADSL dedicated IP.

you've been very helpful, thanks so far. any ideas on the prices on these? cant seem to find a price list on these items, or i'm just getting old - lol

the fixed costs on a diginet line ..... does that include 2 points? or is it the rate per point ie rate per PC?
