I'm sure there is a thread for this but anyways, here goes.

I have two cheapie wireless cameras that are absolute rubbish so I am looking for a solution and I was thinking of just going for a complete setup with DVR, cables etc.

I need some recommendations on setups that is fairly easy DIY wise.

4 cameras to start and perhaps expand to 6 or 8. I'll have a dedicated monitor for the setup but I am also wanting remote access for when I am away or if I am not near the monitor in the house (Phone or tablet).

Budget around R5k.

Advice appreciated. If you have links to products that would be great (I live in the east of Pretoria).

I bought this from Electromann in centurion

Have it for about 6 months now and no issues so far. Remote monitoring also enabled. Had to add a hard drive to the setup for about 800. Installation was around R2000.

Also, if you expanding in the future make sure you get a DVR with sufficient ports. Normally if a bundled setup has 4 or 8 camera then the DVR only has 4 or 8 ports.

You can buy a full 8x cam DIY install kit from Esquire for like R4299 (that's with included HDD for recording, if you already have a spare HDD even cheaper.

Soz for the delayed reponse (Travel, work etc.)

What about something along the lines of this: https://www.takealot.com/intelli-vision-8ch-2mp-ip-network-surveillance-cctv-kit-1080p/PLID46919843

So ip-network vs co-ax. I like the idea of PoE as it will be easier to install (1 cable per camera and I can run a battery back up through the NVR) but what are the drawbacks?

HiLook is not a bad product as it is made by Hikvision being one of the best.

Go for the 16 channel and it'll allow 2 wifi cameras as well.

This should be a Necro post since the OP was in May already, but I already typed this response so anyway.

I have some Reolink POE camera's and they are pretty good. Look at their flash sale, they have a bundle with an 8 channel NVR and 4x 5MP camera's for $380 (about R5500). Reolink does free shipping, you just need to budget another R500 or R600 for customs. Picture quality on these are quite good, you can check the reviews on Youtube from The Hookup.

Geewiz Electronics has good quality CCTV equipment and reasonable prices. Go with HikVision DVR and cameras. You can order the DVR, cables and cameras individually so you can expand later to more cameras, so get an 8 channel DVR to start.

100% HikVision is really easy setup with remote viewing being easy to link up to your phone. Definitely worth getting a DVR with extra channels for future expansion.

NVR will give you the best video quality but it’s still pricey for a good system.

We could also go into details about encoding support on the DVR but as long as you getting H.265 or better you should be fine.

Thoughts on this unit?

Above my ceiling is open so laying cable is fairly easy.

Would 4 cameras cover your yard almost fully?

Get what ever brand IP camera's you prefer and blue iris software, really good stuff :)

These two seem identical except one has prebuilt cables, the other 100m you have to do yourself?

You must have made a mistake with the links because both point to the same product.
