Hi there.
XP Prof SP3 with 2.5Gig RAM.

End of November I bought 2 new DVD re-writers from our company's IT guy. One for my machine and one for my Boet's machine, which has exactly the same specs as mine. He replaced the old with the new re-writer and it works wonderfully. (SAMSUNG Super Writemaster)

I took out the old and put back the new. Everything worked OK until I put in the OEM version of NERO8 Essentials which was boxed with the writer. Immediately my machine re-boots and continued until I shut it down by holding in the power button.

I took out the CD and it worked until I put the CD back in again.
I sent back the re-writer and I have just received it back again. NO CHANGE.

Now, what can cause this? I have checked all the wires and everything, no problem and no loose end.

Can someone please help me?

Regards,
Deon

does it only happen with this disc or any other cd/dvd

if it happens with any disc then it could be your power supply that's faulty...

Thanx for the reply.

It happens with any disk. Just wondering ... Why did it not happen with my previous writer?

Have you tried your friend's writer, or another one as well?

Are you certain that when you RMAed the drive that it was replaced, and not just returned as is?

*shrug* :/

I had one customer last year with same problem, we changed the writer, her one was finished + the machine re-started over and over when inserting any disc. New PSU fixed it. Just one of those things...

Thanx for the confirmation. My machine reboots when CD is inserted, even without the data cable connected. So the PSU was on its last legs anyway, the writer just confirmed it.

I had a strange situation last week, with the same issues as the OP.
Guess what I found out the culprit to be :) swollen capacitors on the mother board of all things. (had 6 in total) most around the power regulators.

Replaced the board and all is cool.

Oops, I hope it's my PSU that's faulty and not the board.

It is not strange. It is normal for the older motherboards. When they start to leak, they are really on their last legs.
