Cd changer repairs on a Jetta 4.

Hi, a friend of mine has a Jetta 4, and it has the original 6 cd changer. Recently the changer started giving problems, it would sometimes play the cd's, then the next time just display "cd error", then the next it plays again, and so on. I dont know what make it is, just that it is genuine VW.

Where can he send it in to get it repaired, please not a chancer. And what can maybe be wrong?

He dont want to get a new mp3 player or whatever, he wants his original changer. Dont ask me why, it's just how he is.

The car or my friend? lol, the car is a 2002 model, so it's a few years old yes. I also thought of that, but I dont think they'll be able to do it, it will be sent in to some place for repairs. I was hoping to hear if someone maybe had something like this done before, any repairs on any audio system, so he can tell me where to go to get honest service.

He's 53 I think, not exactly a friend, more like a "college-friend".

It's probably not worth getting repaired. Just buy a new sony/jvc etc as you can usually get adapters for then to work with the head unit. The VW agents will rape you.

I would get some compressed air and blow the dust out of the changer and off the laser. If not successful, take a lens cleaning cloth and clean the laser, it might save a few bucks.

It may be something simple like replacing the cassette. I have a similar problem and dreading taking it in to a dealer in case they use it as an excuse to charge a hefty fee.

He did clean it a week ago, lens and everything, but it didn't help.

Yes the will rip him off, thats why he dont want to go to a dealership, or any audio repair shop that no one know. Always good to ask around and get info on other's experience.

IMO not if it is as old as this one. I still think it will cost more to repair than to just buy a new player at Game. But thats just me.

I was actually joking about the poor 53 year old...but...if I still had a Jetta with a factory radio, I would rather repair it than stick in some tacky silver thing with blue flashing lights that assaults my dashboard every time I switch it on!!

What's gonna happen when the radios on the newer cars like the Ford Focus and Mazda2 start giving trouble? No way you can put an aftermarket unit in one of those dashboards.
