Hi everyone.

I've got quite a few discs that are scratched and won't read anymore, and many of them contain important data.

I've heard of quite a few tricks to get rid of scratches, like metal polish, even toothpaste(the type with baking soda! :D). I was wondering if any of you have had some experience with fixing scratched CD's. I'd really appreciate to know which of your methods work best.

Thanks in advance

Go to a video store and ask them to buff the discs for you, most of those others are quite abrasive and could cause more issues then they are worth.

I bought some pink stuff from a Dvd store called Disc Kleen (yes, with a K) and it seems to work perfectly.

I have seen it in quite a couple of dvd stores so I'm sure you'll be able to find some. And it is quite cheap (R20 for it and a cloth that comes with it)

I used some cooking oil (of all things!) on some of my scratched data CD's - put a small drop on some soft paper towel/tissue and wipe it lightly over the scratched surface. It gives a very light coat on the plastic and seems to help the laser read the data - I then copied all the data to another disc...

I'd like to give that a go. It makes sense, cause the oil will fill the deeper scratches and still let light through. However... I don't want to get oil on the laser, and those discs do spin at an awfully high speed.

I'll have a look for that. Live in a town though, so I probably won't find it here. That's why I'm considering all the Macguyver methods, like Howard's :D

I tried the oil thing, but the disc wouldn't read at all, so had to wipe most of it off.
I think it's cause the oil contains very little polyunsaturated fat, and it's little writer heart just can't take it.:D

hummm??

i have a lot of PS2 games that are scratched that i would love to play but...........

Are these discs on which you have backed up your data? Then the above tricks might work.

As a rule, if you hold up a disc to the light and can see any hole in the disc, then it is nigh impossible to repair.

"Burnt" dvd's are very different to "original" dvd's. Burnt dvd's have no pitted surfaces as the laser in your writer basically burns minute holes in a layer within the dvd disc.

Original dvd's are "cut" and the 3rd or 4th layer of the disc is physically cut. Filling a scratch with brasso, etc and then lightly buffing it, will probably work long enough for you to get the data off of it.

Any trick is to rub the surface with the external layer of a condom!!! The lubricant works wonders! (TRUE!!!)

If they are original discs then buffing the disc will help. I still have a machine in storage that we will be servicing and starting up again (due to demand). Looks very much like this one...
