CD Player mystery

Since you are writing it off and giving up you’ve got nothing to lose.

Try some Q20/WD40 on the rail the laser runs on and see if anything improves.

Wipe off any excess of course.
i'm going to give the system to a friend - i have no use for it at all, and it's pointless packing it all up and putting back in the store room.

he's fairly good with these types of problems

so the entire system was fully sealed - bubble wrap, plastic sheeting etc - not a spec of dust to be seen.

had a long chat to bose - cd lens and quite probably a capacitor or two have failed.
going to abandon any further effort on it - the cd drive is manufactured by sanyo and available, but capacitors require board-level repair - probably in for at least R1k.

bose suggested ditching the cd and adding a streaming device to the aux input - specifically this unit.
makes sense

Which Bose model is that? If the issue is related to capacitors, then board-level repairs are entirely feasible. You would need to have it assessed, but if you know yourself, then the parts should be easily sourced. The only components I am having issues with are ICs. Just know that if a capacitor goes, then something else like a resistor is also likely gone along with it. It is hard to tell if it could be both the CD lens and capacitors, and not just one of the two?

I won't know. I haven't ever attempted repairing an optical drive other than either replacing it or subsituting it. You say that the drive is available, but if not, you would likely need a donor.

The suggestion is good, though if it is for collector's sake I would rather wish to have the Bose repaired, and use the streaming device in the interim, and you can always use that streaming device with any other device.

i have a ridiculous amount of sound equipment - some inherited from my father, (a committed audiophile), and stuff i have bought.
problem is i'm a bit of a compulsive spender if a good deal is to be had.
2 recent buys were an old B&O system (simply because it is the sexiest thing out there - and a rotel amp, a very good one.
neither has seen any use yet.
i'm up to my ears in the stuff.

so this bose can go off to a home where it will be used and appreciated.
it produces great sound - a 5.1 system - 5 double cube speakers + the acoustimass subwoofer

Lekker to have lots of money

Put a blast of water from your Karcher pressure cleaner into the machine. Afterwards in the oven at 50*C for 2hours to dry it and it will work again.
