CD Rom drive "missing"

Howzit

All of a sardine the D: drive (CD/DVD rom) on my ACER Extensa 5220 has dissapeared. If I put a disc in the drive, it lights up for a few seconds and there is noise but then f-all happens.

Running XP SP 3.

Any help will be much appreciated!

sounds like the drive has given it's last breath

Check the cable, even if it's in, check it again. cables can break or go wrong over time. check and see if the BIOS sees it? See if you can boot up with an installation CD, like your Widows XP CD. If the BIOS doesn't see it, you've checked the cables and Windows CD doesn't boot, then you'd have to buy a new drive.

Had this before, a software issue. Follow the MSKB article below and it should sort it out unless the above is correct.
