CD-ROM problems please help!

I remember having the same problem on my girlfriend's pc. It rebooted every time you put a cd in, but if you just open and close it, it does not reboot.
Turned out to be the PSU if I remember correctly.

Thats right, and you are.
I have saved my self some cash now as I was lucky enough to get a psu to test, and yip installed it and vwalla! The pc works even beter now and the cd rom perfectly.
Thanks.

Eventually, took 3 suggestions of power supply before you even tried it? If 2 or more mentions it, do it....you would have saved yourself a lot of grey hair!

Glad to know the solution as well, if and when I ever encounter this. But first thing I always do with weird issues is replace the power supply. Got a few spare in my car at all times.

Well I did not have one lying around and didn’t want to spend money buying a new one if it’s not the problem. As I said I managed to get one on loan. So that helped me out allot.
Went to a few PC shops and they all replied the motherboard is stuffed. I mean, that is really bad if they are supposed to be professionals.

Just to put it in perspective, one needs to troubleshoot to really sort these things out. Cannot without tools and hardware to troubleshoot with. PC shops are lazy. I have enough pc's at home, so if I have a problem with one, I can easily use another ones power supply. But then again, half the time I got work spares around, so no need.

Most of the time when we encounter such weird problems I first test with a power supply, and 80% of the time it is that. PC shops are exactly that: PC shops. What does it benefit them to fix your pc for you without using spares? They benefit from sales, so all their advice would be motivated by sales. And a motherboard is more expensive than a power supply. As an IT support tech, I always start with the cheapest part in troubleshooting, and work up to the expensive parts. But usually there is very little middle ground...it's either power supply or motherboard. Other things don't die nearly as easily as these, unless they are abused.

I also had a problem with my pc with random restarts when plugging in my cellphone.

I stripped the whole machine leaving only the essentials and got the same problem.

I opened my PSU very carefully and blew out all the dust then everything worked perfectly.

So the moral to my long story is before buying a New PSU try and salvage the one you have.

Glad you got it sorted. BTW her pc was similarity specked as yours and it happened after I bought her a new SATA DVD-rom/writer, luckily I did have another PSU to test with...
