EDIT - Ignore this ... but should anyone wonder, Parallels grabbed the drive before MAC OS X picked up I put a disk in. Disabling the drive in parallels did the trick

Right, so I am moving jobs end of the week, and need to dump a bunch of documents on a couple of CDs. Yay, burning a disk on my MBP ... NOT! :(

When I insert the blank (just opened it) AOpen CD-RW 4x-12x disk, the MBP doesn't do a thing. The "Ask what to do" popup doesn't appear, it doesn't mount the disk, nuffin'.

Any idea what it can be?

Thanks

Normal behaviour?

Eject disk. Create a burn folder on your desktop... fill with files.
Right click and select burn.... enter disk when required?

That didn't work either. For some reason (unlike with USB drives), the DVD Drive gets allocated to Parallels before OS X. So my WinXP VM "grabs" the empty disk before OS X knows it is there.

With USB drives, when I disconnect them from OS X, they become available in Parallels, but the DVD drive seems to be other way around.

/me makes mental note to check auto connect settings for DVD drive

OK... thats a first for me.... not running parallels on this machine.

Normally, os x thinks ur going to burn stuff as part of a workflow, so it doesn't do anything when you enter a blank disk.... the disk gets formatted etc when its about to get written. It not the windoze procedure of enter disk, format, write etc.

Have you tried burning the disk using disk utility?

might be that the disk is now unusable... got a partial format, or partition written bny windoze?

Bob, Disk is fine, burnt and happy.

With Parallels, all your devices are connected virtually, some of them being able to be connected auto/manual (like USB drives, iSight, etc). What would appear (can't check now as my VM is running) to have happened is that the DVD Drive is set to auto connect, so it is in reality allocated to ||s and not OSX (hence OSX didn't know I inserted a disk). The minute I disconnected from ||s, the "what to do" popup appeared in OSX.

USB Drive for instance: Manual connection is set. plug it in, and OSX picks it up nicely, nothing in WinXP VM. As soon as I eject in OSX, it appears as new hardware in the VM. Disconnect from VM, it pops up in OSX again.

So the same is happening with both of them, the initial allocation is just other way around for the DVD drive it would seem

sounds like turning off access to host drives in the VM is the way to go... can't see too much use for it once ur up and running.

Can you drag and drop files btw host and VM windows with ||'s or do you have to connec the host drives like with RDC?

Yep, they are all switched now to manual connect

You configure a share location per VM in ||s' configuration, and the ||s tools on the VM maps a drive to that share. No drag and drop functionality

Gees - I dont even have Parallels and I could tell you that :p

Terrible two's - no exaggeration :(

Hell yeah! This is O/T, but my thread, so I give permission :D

Last night our one starts moaning at about 11pm (having a bad dream, as he was mumbling in his sleep). So my wife and I go upstairs to see what's up. He wakes up, and she asks him: "What's wrong sweetie?" He reckons her: "Yes, sweetie please mommy". After informing him very nicely that he can't have a sweetie now, he must sleep, he went into a tantrum fit for about 5 minutes. I think I am still a bit deaf in my one ear :D

My wife has been instructed never EVER to say sweetie to him again when he is not allowed to have one :p

lol - sounds too familiar. We have a number of no-go words - even saying either hi or 5 (thanks to that bloody auz kids show) has a horrifying effect if we're not prepared to watch 3-4 episodes to satiate her.

Bloody PVR!

lol @ bwana. We are going to have to keep little black books, with all the banned words in ... you know, for consultation before uttering a sentence :D

Almost flipped my lid the other night when the sprog was just drifting off to sleep and my mother decided to open a noisy pack of M&M's. Sleepy to wide awake in 2 seconds. :(

//coaxes back on topic - so why cd-rw's?

I was in a rush this morning, so I grabbed two disks out of a box, which says CD-R btw, just to get to the office and see that they are actually CD-RW disks. Thought I might as well burn one ... you know, playing around a bit :D

Will have to look for the CD-R disks tonight

My burning problems continue: I am trying to burn to a DVD+RW disk, using a burn folder, but I get an error message (forgot to take down the details). However, using the Disk utility and System Profiler I get the following:

System Profiler
Disk Utility

How come it says I can't write to the DVD+RW media?

EDIT: Ok, I found patchburn, but I am not sure if it will work on the MBP. Anyone heard of patchburn before?

You still running parallels? :p

That error message might be helpful. Perhaps though it just doesnt like the media?
