Cell C 3G on a standard Cell C SIM?

A few weeks ago the cell c rep mentioned on the forum that there were no plans to activate 3g/4g on handsets yet, if you wanted data you would need a data sim, but surprise, surprise from Saturday my wife and I have both had 3g access on our phones with a standard cell c sim. She has E63 and I have Xperia X1.

Any one else notice this? Also any ideas on what the data charges are fro this at the moment. Because based on past usage it used to be R2/Mb but for the new data promo they are advertising 39c/Mb?

Be carefull when you using the data if you dont have a data bundle. You might end up paying thousands because of the speed.
 
I have one of the small bundles 25Mb so I just did a quick test with google maps to test the speed - gonna have to wait and see if they make up new data bundles.

Yup, also noticed on my phone. They switched on 3G!! Speed seems to be quite acceptable also.
 
Per MB Charge

Currently the charge is 2.00 ZAR normal out of bundle rate.

Which is absolutely disgusting. That this is still the base charge for people doing simple browsing/email on their phones is totally unacceptable. I know you're not the only network charging this, but if you really want to get more customers away from other networks, then decrease your standard OOB rates. R2000 a gig? Please. Every single person on this forum knows that all you're doing is milking us consumers for all it's worth - because you can. It really is greed in its worst form - such practices are what hinder our countries growth - economically, technologically and even socially.

And don't get me started on SMS rates. Sies. SMSes cost you practically nothing, and yet we get charged 80 something cents a message during peak hours?

Grrrr, I'm getting worked up now!

EDIT: PS. Also picking up 3G in CPT on my Legend. Chowing my money though.

CellC 3G on normal SIM

CellC 3G on normal phone SIM (contract, prepaid etc) - will this ever happen, if so when, are there any news?

Only subscriber in the launched areas will be able to access the 3G sites...provided that your phone supports the 3G 900Mhz band. Price is still R2 a MB but they will surely change this once they have finished the country wide roll out.
 
Lol. I wish that I had read this thread last week. 3G working beautifully on HTC Legend in Durban. Awesome....Been waiting for this for so long!
 
Pricing

I agree the out of budle rate is high for the moment. We do have Somme very interesting items coming very soon. As the joburg area network is still under test we are not quite ready to launch this. I promise the wait will be worth it and we will stand behind offering the best mobile broadband in the country

Possibly - that would be a good starting OOB rate compared to the competition. Still R500 a gig :wtf: But looking at VC and MTN that's a relative bargain ;) I'm thinking significantly better 'normal' data bundles that are more in line with their new offerings - and they should offer them on prepaid too (though I am on contract).
 
I think they should atleast have a tiered pricing for data costs e.g. R 1/mb for data usage of less than 50M, 50c/mb for 51-500mb, 30c/mb for data 500mb and over. This way users will be encouraged to spend more....Now because of the high data rates users are very careful with their data usage.
