Anybody tried Skype calls on the new Cell C data packages?

I'm especially interested in the performance of Skype on the 7.1mbps Cell C modem.

Is there any lag or issues that I should be aware of?

Does it work fine with voice only? Not really bothered about video.

i haven't tried it yet, but voice chat over the playstation network is perfect using cell c 3G so i don't see why skype would be any different. you don't need much bandwidth for voice chat, so i'd imagine anything faster than a 512kbps connection is fine, and cell c 3G is a lot faster than that!

Also, the uplink speed is at least four times faster than 4mbps ADSL, so Skype should actually be much better on Cell C than on 4mbps ADSL.

Currently in Cape Town. Had a video skype session with the kids in Pretoria last night, and afterwards a 30 min skype voice chat with my wife. All worked 100% No problems what so-ever. No lag, no quality problems.

Been using Skype since i got the Cell C dongle and have had no problems, great voice quality, no drops or interrupts, much better than Telkom!

What is your data usage on such a 30min call?

I'm also curious, just for general information, more or less how much data does Skype use, say per hour?

edit: quick google says 20-50mb an hour. Seems good, even on Vodacom/MTN 3G prices!

I have been seeing about 45kbps for just voice which would be about 20Mb per hour.

It uses about 40mb if you leave it on per day. Thats with a little talking.

I have now plonked a 2GB/m Cell C SIM in to a Nokia N78 and am using it as a Skype phone (it supports the Symbian Skype application, and also 900MHz UMTS).

Great, and cheap at the price - R83 per month for unlimited free calls - OK, sometimes I have to use SkypeOut for unfortunate people without Skype !

Near month-end I can just connect the phone to a PC and finish my cap by downloading some useful stuff !

Your skype usage won't be consistent for every user per hour. Unless I'm mistaken (please correct me if I'm wrong) but the VOIP protocol itself only sends and receives data when you say something or are receiving a message.

Edit: than again most phone calls people are always talking so maybe it is consistent :)

Bought the faster 21.6 Cell C offer and contacted brother in law on saturday in London. Perfect video and voice response for about 30 min. Lost the conection once otherwise fine. Average speedtest result is about 3.8 Mb/s.

Skype works great - too great if u ask me
A video call will eat through your cap faster than you can blink unfortunately :/

Thanks to the developers of skype who make it nearly impossible to set limits on the the uploads of your webcam - skype will take whatever your connection and webcam can throw at it - and in my case ... my sister was basically getting near hidef video from me xD
During the call I just saw the upload graph of my monitor proggy go up and up and up. Reaching 3 - 4Mb upload speeds at various points during the call.

Needless to say - my cap was decimated after a 20-30 min call.

So far all my research has only come up with 1 'sorta' solution - buy the paid for version of Netlimiter which is a nifty little proggy that shows you exactly which executable is downloading what (good for if u think u got a leak somewhere) ... and the clincher ... able to set limits for uploads/downloads on a per application basis !
