Cell C Broadband Speed Test Results

Hi Forumites!!!

There are many members that wonder how their Cell C Broadband performs in comparison with other wirless broadband users.

If you have some spare time please do the Telkom speed test and give your area and tower you logon to, aslo state if you are using GPRS, EDGE or 3G. State wether you are connecting with a phone/modem (please give model and manufacturer name). Speed test URL: http://www.telkom.co.za/minisites/dsl/speed.html

Using Novatel 3G card in Krugersdorp over CellC GPRS:

CELL C FOR YOURSELF!!!

Results:
Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

Download time: 323.422 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 12.6 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 1.5 (kiloBytes/second)

I also simultaneously used DUmeter stopwatch and this is the result:

It took 5 min and 56 sec to do the test!!!!!
and the result is about the same:
Maximum transfer rate: 48.4 kbps
and average rate which is the so called LINE SPEED:
12.2kbps

Note: On Vodacom, the same spot, but over 3g, I achieved a maximum rate of over 370 kbps and line speed of about 280kbps and over MTN using GPRS in the same spot, I achieved a maximum of 57kbps and line speed of 40 something kbps

GPRS quicker than that! :(
 
even worse performance tonight

* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 26.2 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 3.2 (kiloBytes/second)

This was on another EDGE channel, channel E19. I checked on my 6680 and I got 4 timeslots for downloading, but alas, no speed whatsoever.

I wonder what the problem is? Could it be their back haul links have not been upgraded yet? The 1st 4 hops on a traceroute reveals cache01.ns.iafrica.com. So is it maybe just not enough bandwidth on their link thru iafrica? :confused:

Would be great if anyone else can test.
 
The Novatel 3G card from Vodacom and MTN supports 3G/UMTS and GPRS. If you use it on Cell C's network it will use GPRS and not EDGE.

Anyway 12.6kb/s on GPRS is very slow.

Maybe Cell C is reading this forum after all, EDGE is a lot faster than when I previously posted. Getting between 100 and 150 kbps now.

I took a chance and forced my phone to use 3G. Thought I could use a Cell C simcard on Vodacom's 3G network. My phone wouldn't log on to the network though :(

I am curious as to how data traffic is routed if I use Vodacom's EDGE towers with a Cell C simcard.

I have been trying to get mine set up on my new contract since Saturday and the Cell C call centre keeps telling me that the system is down. How often does their system go down?

I am starting to seriously regret going with Cell C.
 
Using Speedtest, it seems Cell C does not care about connection speeds.



Are they evergoing to do something to increase the connection speeds?

My contract expires early next year, and I am seriously considering going back to one of the other networks.

One only use Cell C for the promo's. They usually give good voice promo's but DATA. You just don't use Cell C for DATA. Its like you hate yourself! Go to MTN. Much better!
 
Cell C uses EDGE technology real speed is 29.6kbps if your the only one using the tower in the whole country.Yeah these guys are testing 3G but don't be too sure ul pick it up anytime soon...took them years to get the ussd service going
