Cell C Dropping "Fixed" LTE - What are the alternatives?

I live in Daleside, Meyerton. I had the 100GB Cell C package with WebAfrica. (To have the free router, though we only used 35 GB per month.) The Cell C download was 15 to 22 MB/s. Now according to the Telkom Coverage map I don't have LTE coverage, so I had to cancel my contract from the end of September. I sent the Huawei Router back, and my son gave me his old Huawei B315s that he had with Telkom.(He now has fiber) I went to Rain at the beginning of October. But although the Speed tests show 18 to 22 MB/s and upload 8 to 12 MB/s, I find rain to be sluggish in responding to simple browser requests. I have a 2 Sim phone and I use Telkom as the data card. It always shows 4G at home. So I went and bought a Telkom Sim, changed it to prepaid Smart Broadband Wireless and loaded with 5 + 5 GB for R99 and tested it in the router. It found the LTE immediately, and speeds are better than what the Cell C contract were. (23 MB/s Down and 8MB/s up) So at the end of the month, I'll cancel the Rain card, and load the Telkom Sim with 60 + 60, and I'm very happy. No contracts...what a pleasure. And it just goes to show that Telkom doesn't know how many extra customers they would have if they did their LTE coverage testing better! And the data rolls over for 61 days, so it's not a fixed monthly cost.

Following this thread with interest. I'm based just north of Walkerville in Jhb South. Cell C LTE has just got worse and worse this year. Was looking at Telkom but its LTE coverage shows nothing where I am. Cell C uses MTN towers, so based on my Cell C experience I'm assuming MTN is out of the equation as well, which then just leaves Vodacom at the moment.

Small world. I am based in Walkerville :)

MTN here is 68mbps down. Bloody good considering the area. Only network that really sucks here is Vodacom.

They seem to have a different deal, than IS had, also Afrihost has long relationship with MTN, so the cookie is likely to crumble differently.

That's interesting. Based on my experiences with Cell C I'd expected MTN to not be worth looking at. I'd been looking at Vodacom based on the fact that my phone shows 4G...although having said that, the signal does disappear into a void if I move to the South side of the cottage. I'm on the hilly side of Hartzenbergfontein, so I think that does cause issues. I'll check coverage on the MTN site and see what it says.

That's unfortunate, as I know that side is terrible. One of my friends stay in Hartzenbergfontein, so will check what they use. I know they attempted to use all of the sat and wireless offerings they had in the area, and they were all terrible.

Please do, I'd be interested to know. I checked the MTN website and it shows full lte signal, so maybe Cell C was only using a specific tower near to us, which was overloaded. I just don't want to sign up for a new contract and find I have the same issues all over again...
