Anyone know why on earth upgrades are more expensive than just taking out a new contract?

Just for example:

Samsung S3 Mini StraightUp 100 is R199 per month. This is an 'upgrade' 'deal'.

The exact same phone on "Build Your Own Contract" is R169 per month. This is for a new contract.

So why would one upgrade when it costs R30 more per month?

It's my first upgrade so I might be missing something but it seems upgrading sucks.

EDIT: Okay seems I was confusing StraightUp TopUp with just plain StraightUp. However with build a contract and no phone StraightUp and TopUp come to the same amount, R100. Add a phone and they decide to charge a premium for TopUp.

Anyone able to explain that one?

I did not realize Cell C have started this as well ,but Vodacom have been doing this for a while . Most of the Vodacom Contract Specials are only for new lines not for renewals . Its really a stupid practice the deals should be the same for both new and renewing contracts . I mean in essence the renewal is a new contract as you are signing for another 24 month period and another contract .

Maybe it's not updated?

Did you call a store?
My upgrade on the Z1 compact was same price as new contract R429

Could be. One would expect the website to be updated though.

Regardless their practices are a little lame.

No Phone
StraightUp 100 -> R100
StraightUp TopUp 100 -> R100

With Samsung S3 Mini
StraightUp 100 -> R169
StraightUp TopUp 100 -> R199 (The same as the upgrade 'deals' 'only available' to customers eligible for upgrades)

So besides their upgrades not being upgrades at all they also charge a premium for TopUp in certain circumstances.

R10 at least not so bad. Only a 2% premium vs 17%.

Thanks though I'll maybe PM him otherwise I'll just see at the store this weekend.
