So I took a data contract back in 2012 that has a 2GB sim and modem for R119 per month. This contract now ran it's full 24 months and is basically just on a month to month basis.

I just viewed the invoice to see that they just changed the price to R280 per month now. I called to find out why it is so high they told me the contract has ended and they are now charging me the very base charge for 2GB data with no discount.

To my understanding the contract will just continue to run @ R119 until I cancel it but Cellc has a very different way of seeing it saying because it ran its 24 months I no longer qualify for the R119 price unless I renew my contract for another 24 months or I will continued to be charged R280 per month from now on.

I just argued with 140 because I can't see how they can do this? I had a contract run 24 months before with another provider and it monthly payment stayed the same even when the device was paid off. Can they just increase the price like that? Now I asked for it to be cancelled and I have to wait another 30days and still pay another R280 for the 2GB that I can't even use because the coverage is so bad....

Wow can't wait for my 2 remaining contracts to just end. cellc is just a horrible network....

At least on MTN(best signal where U live/work, might consider TM next coz they roam on the network) They dropped my bill. Took a contract with 2GB data and a tablet. On month 25 they dropped it to R169. When I queried this I was told they removed the device portion as it is now on a monthly basis.

That is what I though was going to happen? The device portion should fall away and I should be charged R99 for the data only as still advertised on the website. When I told the consultant this she told me no it does not work like that. I need to renew the contract to a sim only 2GB month to month contract then it will be R99 a month but just leaving my contract I am going to be paying R280 as R280 is the base amount with no discount. If I renew the contract I would see the R280 base charge but on the next line a discount of R181 that would bring the price down to R99 a month for the data and sim only.

This is absurd to be honest. There is absolutely no difference between the sim I have now and for example a new sim only month to month contract

Why do we always have to battle when it comes to these issues?

And to think I wanted to take out a contract with them. Never gotten a contract before but if these are the nasty suprises that one will deal with (not forgetting the shoddy network that one has to put up with in the first place), then I will steer clear of them. They are cheap and affordable though. If only they could balance the other end of this stick.

They did the same with me a year ago. I promptly asked them to cancel the contract.
After three tries the contract was still not cancelled and I felt forced to take a new contract.
Never again! I'm porting to TM as soon as that contract expires next year.

It was discounted because you signed up for two years.

What does it say in your contract?

Yes that is why I'm saying it's a very unusual way of doing contracts?

Let's take my iPhone 5 and this data contract for example.

The data is advertised on the website for R99 per month on a 1,12 and 24monts contract. They add a small clause saying that you are essentially signing for a discount and the real price is R280 per month. It is so badly hidden in the ton of pages you need to scan through while the courier company driver waits. It just does not make sense because you don't advertise this base rate on your website yet you dupe customers into getting a contract.

I have a iPhone 5 contract for R399 per month on a straight up 100 contract. This means I would essentially be paying R405 or so for the simcard only if I leave the contract to go beyond the 24th month? It does not make sense. Why not just change the contract to R100 a month as is the price for the month to month contract.

Cellc is ripping customers off with expired contracts. Forcing them to make sure they cancel or upgrade before the 24th month or they will be charged some absurd random figure whatever they feel is right. Shocking to be honest. Can't wait for my last 2 contracts to end.

If using Cellc is not a punishment I just wonder what is.....

So in exchange for two years of your loyalty, they give you a discount, and you complain.

There are many other threads where people complain that contract subscribers never get anything.

I guess it is just impossible to please everyone.

With my previous CellC contracts I have actually taken the time to fully understand their contract terms and conditions and have ensured that I cancel them a month before the contract expires. You should do the same and avoid this unnecessary stress that you are giving yourself now.

So you agree that R280 is a reasonable amount to be charged for 2GB data only. It's not about the price it's about the way they do contracts. They are the ONLY provider that do it? I had a contract with MTN and they never did it. They keep the sub the same or reduce it to a simcard only price on month to month.

Just saying.

I already did. Just 2 contracts left with a few months on them.

R280 is a bit high, should be more like R199 as that seems to be the going rate for 2GB on prepaid.

Don't compare getting an iPhone 5 on a StraightUp 100 where most of your monthly subscription is paying off the phone to a data contract where you are getting a discounted rate on the data and a cheap modem for free.

There is no such thing as free.... I paid for the Modem. I don't understand what you are saying?

Month to month 2GB data on contract is R99 and the same contract with a modem is R119. How the hell is being charged R280 a month after the contract has lapsed being reasonable? How?

If I am charged anything above R99 the price is being inflated for no reason. It is as simple as that.

There is no difference between a contract that has run it's 24 months and a new contract taken on a month to month basis. Why are they being charged differently because essentially they are both the same. Month to Month contracts.

I was phoned by Cellc Direct and offered a simcard only option for R99 per month or a sim and modem option for R119. It was never mentioned that I was in fact applying for a R280 a month option but it will be discounted for the first 24 months to be R119. Whether or not it stands in the contract I don't know since I don't have the papers anymore.

What gets me angry is that I signed up for the R119 per month deal. Had they just kept the R119 per month price even after the contract has lapsed it would have been fine as that is the amount I signed up for but they went further and got sneaky and added a clause that essentially rips the customer off after the 24 months.

That is the point I'm making.

Thanks for the heads up. I've recently changed over to a CellC data contract with Voice topup.
I'll have to keep a close eye on this when the 12-month period draws to an end!
