Hope someone can offer me some advice as to how I should pursue this latest excitement in my life:
I recently applied for a credit report and discovered that I had an active CellC account. It was also quite suspicious that my personal details (i.e. address, name, work and telephone numbers) was wrong under the Experian column.
Worried that it wasn't a fluke, I e-mailed CellC's customer services on 25 March querying whether I did indeed have a CellC account. As I received no response, I eventually went into a CellC shop on 28 March to query the matter.
Was told that yes, there is an account opened in my name. Wonderful. The person at the counter said to wait three working days as the accounts department would look into the matter and call me.
I then received an e-mail on the 30th with my supposed cellphone number and following message:
Kindly be advised that according to our record you have a contract with us on the above number. Please note that I have also escalated to our sales department if thre was any handset issued to you or who signed for the parcel.
Surprise, but it seems that my idea of escalation and theirs are at two different levels because since then, I have not heard from CellC. I'd think they'd rather let the matter slide because whoever's using my ID is giving them business.
I'm tempted to phone the number to confront the #$#@ using my ID to open his/her account but I'm not the confrontational type (read: timid chicken with no backbone whatsoever).
Would I be within my rights to demand that CellC send me a copy of the ID used to open the account and other relevant details of "my" account? And once that has happened, do I report the matter to the police? The credit bureau people?
I'd really appreciate the help.
