Heard on the radio that CellC will have a stall at the airshow this weekend. They will be demonstrating there 4Gs network. Is this their Cape Town launch?

No idea. I am waiting patiently though for the launch. Moght just pop over to Ysterplaat this weekend

Today, Friday? Or yesterday? Yesterday afternoon my store still knew nothing.

And Cape Town is still not on the web page

Asked at a couple of different Cell C outlets in Cape Town today. One said they don't know when it'll launch but that it'll be 'within the next few weeks', but said I could get the dongles already at the airshow.

The other said it's launching on the 1st. They didn't seem to know anything about the airshow. Which is odd, as that was Canal Walk, right next to the airshow.

When I asked about the data sim cards, one of the store reps insisted that NO existing handsets work with them "because it's 4G". Even after I argued that I know my handset supports 900MHz and that it isn't 4G, he kept insisting it really was 4G, and that my phone would not work. Come on Cell C, educate your reps, or have they been instructed to lie?

That kinda stuff makes me laf always. Its A FACT most people in Cellular stores DO NOT have much knowledge on products. 80% of us on My Broadband know more!

:D:D:D:D What beats the lafing crap out of me is "Telkom 3G" they think im talking bull until I show them the simcard:D:D:D

My friends tell me im a dog at times, the way I leave some stores making them people think they walked into the wrong shop for work

As long as your handset supports UMTS on the 900 Mhz band, you would be able to use the data sim on it, although it will be at reduced speeds as i do not know of any handset supporting 21.6 Mbs.

I find it pathetic how store assistants often have no idea what is what with the products they are selling. I don't want to hunt for the best product choice.. they are suppose to know whats best after I gave them requirements. I shouldn't need to know more than the stores assistants. This happens a little bit too often.

I don't know of any network on which you can actually get 21Mbs either...

I typically get around 400Kbits/sec on Vodacom where I live. But near as I can tell, you generally won't get higher than around 1Mbit/sec if you're using your phone as a modem, since the fastest a Windows dial-up connection (even on the latest Win7) can even be configured to talk to the modem is around 960Kbits/sec, even if it's connected over USB, since most phones (including mine) connect as virtual modems (unless I've missed something, as I'm surprised few other people seem to discuss this limitation? Worse, piece of crap Windows will keep re-defaulting itself semi-randomly to 400Kbits/sec connection anyway). Either way, I'd be satisfied if I could just get my current ****e Vodaripoff speeds at Cell C pricing, I really don't expect anywhere close to 21Mbits/sec, this is SA afterall. (My handset definitely supports UMTS 900MHz, though I doubt the Cell C towers where I live would handle more than EDGE).

Some people like spreading wrong rumours without even a basic search to check if it's correct. Then how do I get with my Windows phone as modem for my Win 7 laptop, over 3Mbit/s on a very crappy MTN 3G signal? Mirracle?

Instead of being a dick and making false accusations about spreading false rumors, you could simply READ PROPERLY and answer the question. If I knew, why would I ask the question, and if you knew, why wouldn't you just answer? Ah, so you don't have a clue actually, but feel like being a dick anyway. Go to hell.

The CONNECT string reported by Windows doesn't mean much. With old RS-232 modems it used to report the speed that the serial port was configured at, not necessarily the actual connection speed negotiated by the modem.

With USB devices, it means nothing. When I connect using my Nokia N95, Windows reports a connection speed of around 400kbps, but I can download at 3Mbps.

so does this mean that cell c are going to launch in more than two cities in september? bloem, east london, cape town... and i was told it's launching in durban tomorrow - lol.

Launching in Cape Town

IM sure they will launch in cape town, Lars said in the article. doubt very much they will launch Durban this week, thats just wish-full thinking.
