I have a Note 2 which is due for upgrade on cellc. The contract still has 3 months left. I went to upgrade today and got some weird information. So I am on a topup100 ( exact name escapes me now) but the phone is only available for R700 pm on that contract but there is a smart chat contract for R559. So I decide to take it on smart chat.

I then was told that I need to settle the outstanding on my old phone as I am upgrading on month 21. Know comes the puzzling part. As I am 'migrating' to a new type contract they want me to pay a R500 migration fee? WTF is the point of an upgrade then if you have to pay an extra R500 on top off the once off service fee which if memory serves was also increased recently as covered in a mybroadband article. Is this fee standard practice? It is exhorbitant bordering on extortion. Not impressed and therefore also didnt take the phone. As if the monthly subscription isnt a rip already.

That does not sound right both the settling of the device cost and the migration fee. To my knowledge when you upgrade the last few months fall away although they do say that you are still liable for the last 3 months but I have never been charged for the last 3 months. A migration fee. wtf is that. You are upgrading so it is essentially the same as taking out a new contract.....

Best is to pm Cellc rep here on mybb or call 143 retentions department..

I did my upgrades through Cellc direct 084145 and did not have any of this rubbish. I assume you wanted to upgrade @ a store?

Jip was in store. I told the sales lady that never in the past was I liable to settle an oustanding amount on a contract when upgrading and she told me that was what the system says I need to pay. Im not even going into the migration fee nonsense as I refuse to pay that. One would think with the current state of their network that they would try keep as many customers locked in a contract and not to deter you by asking a migration fee with no logical reason for that fee. Thanks for the 143 number. I was going to try 084145 tomorrow as I also forgot it was a public holiday and the call centre was already closed. I did think about contacting the cellc rep but I suspect he might be on leave for the holidays. I will phone 145 and 143 first thing this morning and report back. Hopefully with some answers.

It could be the remaining cost for your actual device. I remember when my wife changed to a new package with about two months left we paid about a R100 extra for those months till the old contract was over.

Ye something is not right. They basically asking you to pay them so you can be spending more?

I know with my MTN contract I can upgrade before the current contract expires ( obviously within the early renewal period ) with no penalties. All they do is add the months outstanding to the new contract... it's actually a win for them if you think about it.

Phoned 143 yesterday and they were stumped as to why the in store sales lady said that we need to pay R900 for the old contract and R500 migration. So today I went to another branch and got the phone and only had to pay R100 connection fee and no migration fee nor settlement of the old contract.

The phone is awesome. The screen is magnificent. Really a worthwhile upgrade from a Note 2. Only downside it is my girlfriends contract so I still have to be content with my S4.

Thanks for your input guys.

Ohh ok cool. Nice to know. I knew something was wrong. You could have save R100 connection fee by doing the upgrade via 084 145 but then you need to wait for the to deliver. Guess you wanted the phone asap.

Glad @DarkImpact resolved the issue

I was a bit surprised through - I took out a new Cell C contract and got slapped with R195 sim and connection fee!.

There was nothing on the advert about this so it came as a big surprise. The other adverts actually mention this on the add

Cell C said afterwards when I complained that I could have cancelled at the point when I was told, but I had already cancelled my Vodacom sub and forfeited a month and my balance, so it was too late.

The thing with Cellc which I don't like is that each Store is operated by a 3rd party and Cellc only gives guidelines to these store of what they are allowed to charge for each service. That is why you might find that 1 cellc store charges R100 for sim and connection and another store charges R200 for the same thing.

It leaves customers with the sense that you don't know what silly charges will be added to you account when you visit the store.

I make sure to advise people it might be wise to wait 5-7 working days to get your stuff through Cellc direct 084 145 as they do not charge where the stores usually charge like migration fees, connection fees and sim swap fees but you have to wait 5-7 working days for the order to get processed and delivered.
