Anybody tried using cellity Free SMS?
http://www.cellity.com
This actually not SMS at all. It is an internet based messaging system, so you will pay for the data traffic.
You need to register for the service (free) and install a client on your phone.
Client is available in various versions, so you do not need a "smart" phone; any phone that can run java apps should do.
The cool bit is that you do not need to keep the client running on your phone with an open GPRS / 3G connection to be notified of new messages.
If you are not signed in or running the client and you receive a message, the server gives you a "ping" call to notify you. (phone rings, but is dead when answered)
This call is supposed to be from a known number (+496966102800), which you can store in your phone book on your phone so that you know not to even try to answer.
Unfortunately it seems as if MTN (or some network along the line) is blocking this caller ID.
The ping calls I got when testing showed up as private number!
Still seems like a very useful service. Messaging worked fine.
