cellphone as a modem query

What is the fastest or best connection speed achievable when connecting to the internet and using my cellphone as a modem.I am a cell c pre paid customer and when my data bundle on my laptop is used up, the out of bundle rates r so ridiculous,i would like to know if using my N81 as a modem would be a viable option.
Am currently able to intermittently get 3.6 Mbps on laptop modem but its usually 384 since they say it aint guaranteed but advertise it so aggressively like its so obvious.What will i get when i switch to using my phone as a modem??

CellCs out of bundle rate is R2/MB, which is probably the same as for your existing data contract. It seems the N81 only support up to 384kb/s anyway.

Best I've achieved using HTC Hero as a modem, setting UTMS, and Speedtest.net as a measure, was 4.13 Mbps DL and 0.96 Mbps UL. That was on 10 July 2010
