Hi Guys

I have a friend who's ex appears to be monitoring her sms's and even able to read her mxit chats.

Although not an IT person, he does have access to an IT department.

My query is: How is he doing this? Could he realistically have cloned her sim card somehow, or is he able to logg into some server over the net and get access to this info?

I'm sure whatever he is doing is illegal, but suspecting it is one thing, proving it another.

Any ideas or advice?

Is your friend on contract or prepaid?

If on prepaid, ditch and burn the SIM, and replace with a new one.

if on contract, things will be more difficult.

You get applications that allow you to do this. Basically someone installs this on your phone and it uploads data to via the internet connection to a website. You login and you can see what has been uploaded.

I would take the phone in to the manufacturer, e.g. Nokia at Vodaworld, explain that you think someone has installed something on your phone. They can flash the phone, which should eliminate everything. Then get your sim card cloned, cost is about R 60 and all you need is a list of the last 5 numbers called.

That should take care of any spyware installed on your phone. It is possible, although highly, highly unlikely that someone at the provider is snooping on your phone. You will need to take that up with your service provider. But that is really an option of last resort because it is really unlikely.
