Seems they're talking about censoring ("filtering") the Internet again :( This is utterly ridiculous, it's not up to isp's to decide what content to allow or not. I can understand them stopping blatant piracy, but where is this going to lead? Governments seem to be desperate to control the flow of information. Not too long ago Patricia de Lille was calling for censorship of the 'net. These people just can't stand to see the free exchange of information

I'd think it impossible to try... it'd probably spawn many anonymous vpn's and proxy's...

SA would be easier to control than other parts of the world. Just have to have telkom implement it. All the content that the 'powers that be' don't want you seeing would just move over to those dodgy server farms in eastern europe, south america, etc...

One way or another, the content will get through. and public uproar will be strong when people can't find music, video, porn like they used to.

Nah...eskom would be even better at implementing it... actually, they're currently testing their new censorship system, code-named "Load Shedding"

What the article is about is some management at companies like AT&T mouthing of about something they have absolutely no idea about.

Filtering copyrighted material like that AT&T idiot mentioned is just not possible.

Probably because a lot of people wouldn't know how to setup and use a proxy or vpn?

Actually more to do with the totalitarian power the government has over the Chinese people. It's a bit of a false analogy as western governments don't quite have that power yet. A lot of people do bypass the censorship but get sent to jail for it (thanks to Google).
My point is why are they even thinking along those lines? This sets a dangerous precedent.
