Fellow friends in ICT... I need a bit of your advice.

I am going to a wedding in a village in Vryheid very early tomorrow morning - not sure where just yet, still waiting for the name of the village.

I am wondering which route to take. According to google maps there are three potential routes to take and with few minutes arrival time differences.

Possible routes

Bronkhorstspruit - Malahleni - Ermelo - Piet Ritief - Paulpietersburg - Vryheid

Standerton - Volksrust - Utrecht - Vryheid

Heidelberg - Villiers - Vrede - Newcastle - Utrecht - Vryheid

Since the time differences according to Google Maps aren't that great, I am more concerned about road conditions and potential delays. Anyone travelled these routes recently?

Thanks in advance!

You driving at night?

I will not drive Mpumalanga roads in the dark... Way too many pot holes. Best I think road wise would then be:
Heidelberg - Villiers - Vrede - Newcastle - Utrecht - Vryheid

I'd go with this route:

Heidelberg - Villiers - Vrede - Newcastle - Utrecht - Vryheid

Often used it when travelling between Newcastle / Utrecht and JHB. The Standerton route is very much used by trucks, IIRC.

I haven't traversed that route in a good few years, though, so hopefully someone with more recent experience can advise you :)

What about N3 to Ladysmith and then sideways/up through Dundee to Vryheid (I do not know the Ladysmith to Vryheid road conditions, but the KZN roads are normally pretty decent).

Adds about 40 minutes but those Mpumalanga roads on the other routes are so damaged by coal trucks...

Thanks for all suggestions - I will leave Pretoria at 4am. I am also sold on this route:
Heidelberg - Villiers - Vrede - Newcastle - Utrecht - Vryheid - just that I have never traveled it - in fact I have never been to Vryheid

Just keep your eyes peeled for potholes and you should be fine.

It is, 100 km more than the others, but the surface is better. Especially for night time driving.

There are like over 50 speed humps between ladysmith and newc. Are those speed humps gone?

Last time I drove there they were gone, thankfully! There's like about 5 left now just before you reach NN town... They were such a waste of time!

Well... After much consideration I ended up taking the "Standerton - Volksrust - Utrecht - Vryheid" route! I regret it! Too much roadworks and "stop and go" (added an hour to my trip), even had to yield for cows in some areas! - Was even late for the wedding, thankfully I was not the best man! :D

Told ya! No cows and stop and gos on the N3 :p

Hope you had fun.
