Century City ADSL

Hey all,

Just got a 10mbps line installed in Century City, Cape Town and seem not to have gotten the greatest connection. Sync drops every hour or so.

Is there anyone else also in the area on here and if so, what speeds/stats are you getting?

did you install filters on your voice-lines? Other interference will make it drop.

Could you perhaps post your actual down & up sync rates, and not just the max?

I'd guess that you're currently running at 1Mbps down/512kbps up, because your SNR margins are very high for even a 4Mbps ADSL connection with such a high line attenuation!

You'll be lucky if you can even get a stable 4Mbps connection.

All I know is the exchange where I stay by Waterstone Square supports up to a maximum if 4 mb only. My line is stable and had no issues. You shouldn't be having issues I'm guessing so log a fault with Telkom

Yeah, you're spot on - syncing at a measly 1024 down, 507 up. I suspected it might be unusually bad, that's why I'm wondering if anyone in the area is getting better rates. I'm in Manhattan Apartments. Checked the wall connections / filters / etc. all seems fine. Is there any point logging a fault these days with Telkom?

I've had a problem in the last when my line lost sync and wouldn't resync. They came out next day. They tend to be quick around this area so yes, it's worth while.

You can also phone Telkom and simply ask them to change your sync profile to 3Mbps, because then you should still have decent SNR margins of 12dB+.
You might even be able to sync reliably at 4Mbps, but anything above that you will be sacrificing stability.

I'm not sure if it's worth while for you to log a fault, because you are simply too far from the DSLAM (related to your line attenuation) to get even a stable 6Mbps connection

So far Telkom has fixed my & my parents' ADSL issues within 3 business days after I've logged the faults on their website, however I doubt that they'll quickly fix my current one

I live next door to a telkom exchange and I cannot get a stable 10mb line, not even stable 8mb. They've been around to "fix" the line at least 3 or 4 times in the last couple of months. I downgraded my line to 6Mb and it's stable as ever. Far prefer stability over speed, and I suggest you try the same if you want a line that doesn't keep dropping.

@mcryan: you might live next door to the exchange, but it won't mean that your lines actually go directly to it, which would be really stupid though.

Could you post your ADSL line attenuation values here...?
