Certifying a copy of a lost ID

Hi everyone, I need some advice.

My mom passed away awhile ago and around the time of her death her ID went missing. I was fortunate enough to make a copy beforehand and certify it, which has helped me thus far. Recently I have had a dispute with the municipality on her rates account to get a refund on the account as it was overpaid. I am the only next of kin and the estate/will has been wrapped up with myself being the only beneficiary.

The problem is that the certified ID copy is more than 3 months old and now I want to know how I could go about getting a copy of her ID certified. I do have an affidavit from the time when her ID book went missing.

Please advise

You can't legally get a copy certified without the commissioner of oaths having sight of the original.
No passport or other docs available?

Is there any reasonable chance of finding the same person who had sight of her ID back then?
I would do it (and have done it) for ID documents which I have previously seen, as long as it's my stamp on the document.

Weekend at Bernie’s (sorry for your loss)

Every 3 months I redo my personal and businesses documents at the police station. They never compare the originals to the copies or take it to someone you know who has the authority to do so. As long as all are above board.

BTW, where is your mom’s death cert?

I think I should take my chances at the police station as I have a whole bunch of documents that need to be recertified, and hopefully they won't ask questions.

I have my mom's original death certificate with me, maybe the police would be understanding in the matter.

I never understood when places demand a certified copy that is not older than 3 months. I mean, the certification remains valid, indefinitely. It is as if everyone is trying to jump on the RICA/not older than 3 months bandwagon and it somehow spilled over to static documentation as well.

Exactly my frustration too. How does a certified document lose it's authenticity in the absence of any tampering thereof :X3:

It does not, afaik. I only ask for a new copy from clients when the "old" copy is like really bad or would result in a bad electronic copy.

If it was any other document, other than the ID, I would've suggested that you take an uncertified neat/laminated copy and a clearly copied copy of this document and ask them to certify it. Worked for me in the past.

Another option is to walk into the police station and simply explain the situation. Take all your documentation with you.
