Chain lube honda

Hello,

Riding / driving Honda atm, fairly new bike.
1k on the odo.
When do I need to start putting chain lube on her?

Book states I need to use Honda's special chain lube, but that probably costs a fortune.
What alternative chain lube can / should I use for my bike?


2nd question
What is the going rate for a service at a dealership?
Last I was quoted like R700 for the 1k service, dunno if I want to pay that for a pint of oil lol..

Not sure how street bikes work, but on my KTM dirtbike, I spray on WYNN's chainlube after every ride as well as spray prepsol on the bike & rinse it off, then WD40 which I then leave on.

Gratz on the new bike!
 
Service price depends on the bike, bigger the engine usually means a more pricey service. My CBX 250 cost R650 to service. I'm pretty sure you lose your warranty if you don't service at the dealer, I think, so just suck it up and take it in.

I havent lubed my chain much since I got it =\

Only got spanjaard chain lube here atm, should I use it?
 
For my Suzuki the manual said it needs chain lube every 1000km

For the Ducati the mech told me to lube chain after filling the tank which is roughly every 150km

Standard chains cost around R1000 so its worth looking after. The chain should never be left without lube long enough to get shiny. Lube more often when riding in rain.

I use standard Motul road chain lube. Its around R100 for a can but the stuff lasts months as you don't have to use a lot. Can get it from any dealer or bike shop.

Oh and never clean road bike chains with off-road chain cleaner. Made that mistake once and it ate through the o-rings so had to replace a new chain. Parafin is safe and cheap.

Yeah fair enough, I must add...I kinda go through a can every 2 months or so because ... well ... my bike goes through rivers and gets stuck in sand hills and falls over and and and.

I had it. wasnt too impressed, but its probably ok. it flings quite a bit IIRC. just make sure you lube regularly. i ride year round rain or sunshine. ride 500km, lube. ride another 500km clean and lube. repeat. got that from the thinkbike forum and it works ok.

with the spanjaard i got a bit of rust on my chain during winter, but then i lubed slightly more regularly and it stopped.

i personally prefer wax. ive had:
-spanjaard lube. messy.
-castrol wax. clean.little fling.
-(currently)wynns lube.messy.

Yeah even rain can get rid of the lube fast. Someone told me chain wax works best on hooligan (aka dirt) bikes. Maybe worth a try but I doubt if anything will handle those rivers & sand
 
Chain wax was originally developed for bicycles. People started using it on their bikes because it makes them look better. Oil does however work better with the power levels that bikes put out.

As a couple of hints look at competition events like MotoGP – they only use oil. Also you do not get wax for industrial power transmission chains.

Go with a lube at about 1000 km intervals. Every second or third time clean the chain if it is a road bike (more often for dirt bikes). I use a rag dampened with paraffin. You want to put this on a rag rather than sloshing it all over the chain. You do not want any left before putting on the new lube obviously, so wipe off the excess with a rag and then run the back wheel with the bike on a stand to fling off what is left (or ride it for a few hundred meters). Let the film that remains evaporate and you are ready to apply the new lube.

Do you have any idea what WD40 is used for? Its a solvent not a chain lube, the worst thing you can ever spray on a working chain as it removes the existing lube.

It's NOT a solvent, it's a penetrating lubricant.

I think he means he sprays the entire bike with wd40 excluding the chain. I did the same when I had my ktms, prevents rust and also makes your next clean so much easier as the wd40 prevents the dirt from properly sticking to the bike due to the protective film it creates. I used Castrol DWF though which is the same thing. It's an excellent product to use on bikes, I used about half a can after each wash. Just go to a motocross or enduro event and watch the guys coat their bikes with the stuff after a wash.

No no! No WD40 near the chain, I use it for all the other parts on the bike after I washed them with prepsol etc. to avoid rusting after having taken the bike through muddy rivers / sand / rain / whatnot & washed it clean.

Yes by all means coat everything but your chain. One of its original uses was to protect rockets - they sprayed the entire rocket with the stuff. The reason why I say its a solvent and not a lubricant is it eventually dries up where a lubricant want when not in use.

Also the name means Water Disperse and thats why its good at preventing rust on wet steel.
