Challenges ahead for digital TV in SA

Not sure where you read anything about DRM, but DRM is not inherently bad. Copyright should be protected, and in the digital age where copies can be made without loss of quality, DRM is needed. The problem is when DRM takes away more of our rights than is needed to protect the Copyright owner

Sentech has been using Kudelski Content protection systems (NagraVision) .. pity its been cracked so many times its swiss cheese. The rest of the world is about 5 smartcard versions ahead. (but even the new smartcards are STILL cracked).

Its easy to confuse 'Content Protection' with DRM as there is no de-facto standard for DRM, everyone is scrambling for a piece of that pie. Content protection is another beast.

The article is a bit misleading, I dont see the paralled between 'Digital broadcasting' and Digital TV... there is only one Digital TV system and thats using HDMI. Are you going to see all decoders and such things move to this technology in the next 4 years!!! yeah RIGHT! HDMI does Surround Sound, DTS, 16:9 widescreen, Hidefinition... think the broadcasters can accomodate this technology?

Just hope we don't only have the usual suspect (Multi Choice) that will use this..
