Change device name for wifi Samnsung Galaxy Tab

I'm trying to change the device name that the Samsung Galaxy Tab registers onto my wifi network with. Currently the device appears on the network as "android-HexadecimalNumber", and I'd like it to change that to the user's name so that it's easier to identify each user.

The Samsung call centre seems convinced I'm trying to change the wifi hotspot name, no matter how many times I explained that I'm not setting up a hotspot. The discussion went around in circles, punctuated by long periods of playing solitaire while on hold, and I'm not all that convinced that I will actually be called back by someone who knows anything at all.

Any ideas?

Look under wifi direct, settings, device name.

Thanks, I just went and tried that, but it's not the same name as the one used to connect as a client on wifi.

Try this:
In android go to Settings > Applications > Development and tap on Device Hostname. You can then change the name and it should show up when attached to adb.

or

Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Bluetooth settings -> Device name

Or look for an App that can change the hostname.

I don't have a Device Hostname under Applications ->Development

Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Bluetooth settings -> Device name

That's the device name for Bluetooth, and isn't the same as the device name for wifi.

Maybe the device uses the Bluetooth hostname as the wifi hostname as well.

No, the bluetooth hostname is the model name, in this case "GT-P6200", and the wifi hostname is "android_2e47cf336197f86"
