Changed from MTN to Telkom mobile now screen turns on randomly

Hi
Long story short i am helping an old man who has a samsung pocket running without data so its still on very old android its never been connected to the play store and only used for calls and sms and then barely used at all.
a few weeks ago he changed from mtn to telkom and now the screen randomly turns on without the phone being touched.

does anybody know why this happens or how to stop it

I think it is doing SIM Update, even my feature phone does that once in a while it switches on and says sim updating, don't know what is updating.

Have you disabled mobile data on the phone. Perhaps your old man has the alarm set up, unless it's an indication that the phone is roaming on another network. As the second poster mentioned it could be.
