Changing current number plate to new car?

Is it difficult changing one's current vehicle number plate to a new car?

i retained a number in dbn (was quite some time back).
it involved de-registering the vehicle holding the number i wanted to keep, registering the new vehicle with the now available number, and re-registering the old vehicle (had to also get a new roadworthy cert).

it was quite a process.

In 2010, I've "upgraded" from A4 to A6, and they kept my number the same, not so sure how much work was involved. It was done in one day (CPT)

Sounds like a dealer did it? They know the tricks.

They issue a new number for the old car, freeing up the number you want to keep, then they allocate it to the new car. Each transaction will incur a fee. It was a few hundred rand last time I did it (in KZN). It's as quick as getting a different number, just costs a little more.

Thanks, sounds promising. I was thinking/hoping that it couldn't be that difficult.

It is difficult, uless you get a dealer (or someone in the know to assist).
First step is that both cars must be in your name - deregister the one car (the number plate you want to retain), and register it on the new car. Then transfer ownership of the old car.

I walked into the licensing department off the street and asked that my old number be transferred to my new car. Ten minutes late it was done.

The guy to ask is ShaunSA, he knows his way around this stuff.

But (in KZN) it's dead simple. Many people I know keep their number from one car to the next. I've heard of farmers swapping the number to a tractor for a while till their new car is delivered, and then swapping it to the new car when it arrives. As long as you pay the fee, it's no big deal.

I know if your car is well known in your district then one might want to keep the plate or if it is a special combination etc.

Yes, a nice 5 digit plate I was lucky to get.

Hoping someone could provide some info, on the process of buying a car registered in another province? I'm in the WC, car's in the EC.

I want to keep my number plate, so does the owner. Both cars are in our names.

What would the steps be? Perhaps you can account for the owner and myself? I understand that one of them will be the both of us deregistering our vehicles. I have a feeling I should rather do this when back in the WC? I take it I will have a new or temporary EC licence number/number plate, for when I drive back to the WC? Do I then process both cars?
