Just wondering....... is there any effect on the gear box if one does not follow the normal gear sequence eg change down directly from 5 to 2 and change up 3 to 5 etc?????

Also is there a problem with starting from a stationary start in gear 2??????

I often change from 5th to 2nd or 3d, especially when breaking. While the kludge is in my speed will drop too low for 4th, so 3d it will have to be. Each gear has a speed/rev ratio that it is happy to operate in. As long as you stay within that I can't see any problem. Personally I follow the very subjective approach of listening to hear whether the engine is "happy".

Pulling away in 2nd - I think that puts unnecessary strain on the kludge and on the gear itself. I’ve done it, but the car then sounds “unhappy”.

And yes, the car does speak! A diesel should never sound as though it drank a can of petrol - it's a tenor, not a alto or soprano!

Nope, but don't be stupid and go from 5000rpm in 5th to 1st ;)

Not really, unless your speed is too low (when upshifting) or high (when downshifting) for the gear you are going to.

 Yes. You'll destroy your clutch in less than 100 000km if you constantly do that. Only use 2nd when you're pulling away on ice or in snow.

lol nope...as long as you change gears while using the clutch its all good in the hood!

Slightly off-topic, but I'd like to confirm. If I have to push-start a car (manual), I always do it in 2nd. Am I correct in doing this?

Mmm, judging from the previous posts, my spelling of "kludge" is wrong. Correct spelling noted. :)

Yeah, sorry about that, forgot about push-starting. That's the only other time you'd be in 2nd gear from a standing start.

a talking car eh? ahhh, so you drive one of these?

There really shouldn't be any problem changing from any gear to any other gear as long as when the clutch is engaging the revs of the drivetrain and going to be able to match up to the flywheel, you can rev you car to 9000rpm in 1st , get it to 60km/h then engage neutral then if the engine revs are back down to 1500 u can engage fifth gear as it will be in the general rpm where its running at the same speed, your synchros will have to do a little work as usual, but obviously doing 70km/h and then sliding into neutral and then engaging 1st with the engine at 1500rpm is going to cause your clutch and synchros to do a whole lot of work and you gonna stuff things up.

Pulling off in 2nd can be done but generally you'll have to ride the clutch just a bit longer which will cause more wear, and then the rpm might not be in the optimal range for the engine and you will cause it to labour more. On slight downhills and easy surfaces i usually use 2nd gear to pull off. Very often i shift 1st, 2nd,4th,6th

kludge ...bwaahahaaha... i only see now u mean CLUTCH... i read your whole story wondering what a kludge is.

Unless u need to go backwards, then do it in reverse :P

I always change up in sequence.
Take off in 1st.

To add to the comments already given, and in simpler terms, it does not matter into which gear you down shift, as long as there is no braking action when the clutch is released, i.e. the gearbox is not used to reduce the car's speed.

On my rediscovery of mybb I came across something amusing...
Kludge :D I thought the chap was just being funny at first. lol :)
//Continues on the catch up spree of sorts

lol, Sad thing is, I actually spell-checked that in MS Word (2007)...
Anyway, welcome back, though I don't know you nor you me, yet. :D

160 in 3rd ? bit dumb

means to reach your top speed of 220, you have 60km/h to play with in the last 2 gears ! so its like 1st.......2nd........3rd......4th.5th

but assuming gear ratio's means you have a top speed of about 260 ? not likely :P
