im having trouble with vista and wlan. Iv read in a couple of forums that i should change the default gateway. Now im no sure whether to change it on the router or some where else. And what should i change it to?.

yes, you change it on the router...

are you using more than one device on your LAN? Like an ADSL router AND a wireless router? make sure that you set one as the DHCP server and the other as client. You also cannot have one as DHCP and one as client, it is either or.

If you have more than one device, they have to be in different ranges...

Device One: 192.168.1.254
Device Two: 192.168.2.254

yes the xp device is using lan cable and the vista is using wlan. how do i set one as dhcp etc?

Can you describe your setup in more detail for us?

1) How many computers do you have?
2) How are they connected?
3) What kind of internet and internet device? (eg. ADSL via Router)

Don't worry about the operating systems for now.

This will help us give you a better idea of how you should lay your network out and configure it.

Ok in using the billion 800vgt router, with a pc and laptop connected. The pc is via lan and laptop is wireless. the laptop is giving probs not the pc.

Have you configured the wireless setup in the Billion Router?

Does the laptop see the Wireless network?

If they are both connecting to the same device (the billion router) one by cable and the other by wireless... then you don't need to change your gateway or your DHCP settings. You just need to set up the wireless in the router with the right settings (including security) and then configure the laptop to see and access the router.

yes i did,my laptop sees the router i can even go into the router with the laptop.
under network and sharing center is shows that im connected to a multiple network(router i think) but im not connected to the internet. funny enough im using the laptop to reply here but this is the only site i can browse.

are you picking up other wireless networks in your area?

Can you browse all sites on the desktop?

You are not capped are you (running on local only)?

Can you try and put these DNS settings into your router...

https://www.opendns.com/smb/start

and make sure you are using the SAIX Cache Proxy (if you are on SAIX, not IS)....

HTTP Proxy: dsl-cache.saix.co.za
Port: 8080

Yes i can pick up other networks, the desktop can browse all sites,im not capped

OK, can you change the Frequency Range in the Wireless settings? It may be that one of the other wireless networks close to you is using the same frequency range and that gives problems. Just pick one of the other higher ranges... and reboot the router.

ok think this router and my lappy just don't like each other. Im now connecting the laptop only using lan cable but still it don't work,so i guess its not the wlan, because it worked when connected to other network wirelessly.

so something on your laptop is blocking the internet?

go to a command line on each computer and do an IPCONFIG command.

See what it puts out.

Try pinging other sites from the command line... PING WWW.GOOGLE.COM

Project X go to your wireless properties and change your IP configuration to be assigned by DHCP. I suspect that you have a Static IP on your wireless configurations.

By default the 800vgt wireless name should be wlan-ap. Can you pick this wireless network up(wlan-ap)? If this does not work out. Log in your router go to Congiguration> Lan > wireless, change the channelID to 6 or 11.
