Changing over from Vodacom to MTN

Hi guys.

TOTALLY new to the whole BB scene and I'm hoping you guys can help me out.
I bought a Bold 9000 (yesterday) which is secondhand. It was registered (Device PIN) on the Vodacom website (BIS) but I am going to use MTN. My sim has been setup up for BIS so I'm ready to go except I cannot use the MTN website (BIS) to setup my email accounts since the "Device PIN" has already been used on the Vodacom one. I have the username and password etc for the original vodacom one that he registered the device on but when logged on, I only see and option for changing the device but nothing for "de-registering" the device so that its "free" to be able to register it with MTN.

I hope I have explained myself properly ... lol
Can anybody help?

The guy that had the phone previous to me recommended MTN instead of Vodacom as he says he compares it with his friend also having a Bold 9000 who has faster download rates than him ... seems to think its everywhere and not in one specific place. Dont know ... just bought an MTN simcard to try this out.
 
AWESOME! ... thanks guys ... I went searching for this issue and found that the previous owner is the only one that can "release" the blackberry in order to use on another network by calling his/her network and asking them to "release" it.
Once done, I logged on to MTN and in 5 minutes, I was up and running.

Now talking about MTN how are their services on EDGE as I only receive GPRS on VodaCom - I did buy an MTN simcard and yes I've better coverage with the handset turns on EDGE connectivity

Would it be wise moving to MTN or staying with VodaCom
 
90% of the MTN network is covered by BIS. Vodacom turns edge off wherever they offer 3G (to save money because they don't make enough). If you have a 2G Blackberry you have no choice but to go with MTN. If you have a 3G Blackberry then it doesn't really matter.

That's not true. I'm on Vodacom, and my phone steps from 3G to EDGE, and my wife's 8520 gets EDGE in the same areas I get 3G.
 
I'm in a poor suburb then - where vodacom doesn't generate enough money to turn on EDGE, only places I've noticed edge in areas such as Sun City, EAstgate mall, Doornfontein - that's about it and at night GPRS is dead in my area - thinking of getting a 3G phone now
 
Depends where you live but they are doing this in most locations now. In my town they started 3G and turned of edge, my friend with a 8520 mostly gets SOS on her phone or gprs occasionally. This is an official Vodacom policy and the company has stated they are doing this because no one needs edge anymore. To confirm look at the MTN and the Vodacom coverage maps and you'll see what I mean. Vodacom EDGE coverage is sparse.

I'm going to change to MTN some days BB is useless without internet access - really have a 3G handset but no BIS offering on Nokia handsets like that will ever happen - maybe I should wait for EVDO to be activate on carriers if it ever happens - CellC LTE - if that ever happens. Seriously ill move next month because the service is poor and also looking for Speed app but no luck. I've no issues with signal just DATA has been down more than 5days and is very slow.
 
This kind of thing depends on where you live: if mtn offer 'the better connection' then go with them, however, going with Blackberry is a good idea (nokia=boring) and BIS is just the icing on the cake. EVDO will never happen, and lte is still so many years away.
 
Scooby, I'm thinking of doing the same. With vodacom I get GPRS 95% of the time,what's the point having a 3G phone then! I've been thinking about trying out mtn for a month for a while now and seeing how it goes. And today I've made up my mind that I'm going for it. Internets really frustratingly slow today. Did u lose ur emails when changing networks? And how are you finding mtn compared to vc?
 
I suggest you test an MTN cheap sim first before going through the whole process to be sure they're better where you live and work. Whether you lose e-mails depends on what e-mail service you're using but if you switch the e-mails on your phone will probably be deleted (you can choose the save option in the menu for your important e-mails). If you're using g-mail or something similar then you can easily get them back.
 
I kinda tested it that way but not thoroughly, will test it again though. If I get a 3G signal on my nokia with an MTN sim in it is it safe to assume that I will also get a 3G signal on MTN BIS?
 
Yep, that's how I've tested it few weeks ago. But I obviously wasn't receiving any emails or BB messenger notifications etc while the MTN sim was in my Berry so I just had it in for 5mins or so couple times through out the day. And judging by that I should be better off with MTN. But will test MTN further. Thnx for the help/info oronte.
 
I also got a blackberry 9000, the problem I have is that I cannot make calls or send sms, whenever I try to make a call I get call failed,if I try sending an sms a cross appears next to my message.if I try the cellc *147# menu I get SUPPLEMENTRY SERVICE ERROR:GENERAL ERROR.yes I am on cellc as it is the only network that allows me to go on web. With VC and MTN I get the message PHONE NOT ALLOWED MM6 SOS

Please send me the IMEI of your phone. It can be found printed on the back of the phone and starts with 35

I would like to check something for you.
