Changing to telkom mobile how ?

So I have a Vodacom top up contract which is completed. I want to change to telkom mobile zonke to get those most excellent rates. What is the procedure to do this BUT keep my number ?

1. Walk into a telkom shop
2. Tell them you want to port your number.

Must I first give 30 days notice to Vodacom. Then make it Vodacom prepaid. Then port to telkom ?

It makes it MUCH easier if you are on prepaid. Unless you want to pay extra for the month.
