The Chapman's Peak toll tariff will increase by 6.3 percent next month, the Western Cape transport department said on Wednesday.

"The increase arises from a contractual arrangement between transport and public works and the concessionaire... ," the department said in a statement.

"[It] is determined according to the percentage increase between the Consumer Price Index in March the previous year and March the current year, plus 0.4 percent."

Last year's increase was 6.45 percent.

A notice of the increase appeared in the Government Gazette on July 19.

Vehicles exempted from paying the toll fee were SA Police Service vehicles while on duty, and the SA National Defence Force, traffic police vehicles, ambulances and City of Cape Town emergency services vehicles.

Firefighting vehicles and rescue vehicles would also be excluded.
