I would like to know if there is another way of efficiently charging a laptop or cell phone or any other rechargable unit? As things stand they are pretty bad and most people seem to think this is the start of things to come. What happens if we get to a point where we only have power for an hour or three a day? Generators are expensive and the current fluctuates.

Generators with Automatic Voltage Regulators are fine for running laptops etc off. I highly doubt that daily power supplies will drop to 3 hours a day. You can also look at UPS backup that can give you hours of backup time.

Send me a PM if you want to explore some options.

dont have links, but I've seen a LOT of ads for new solar powered cell phone chargers -
think prices (in US) were around $30 or so, for a little solar powered gizmo to charge your phone.. Its worth doing some googling, and perhaps ordering - rather than having to use petrol to create a charge.
SA has lots of sunlight, so exploit it..

I have a solar set up that I use to charge my bike and my other appliances. A laptop would run off of it just fine.
