Charging Survey - EV owners only

In the last year, how has charging your EV been?

Why?
Public charging is only necessary if you drive more than your car's range in a day, or you have no access to a home charger (lots of places in the UK have this issue - no driveways/offstreet parking so people park in the street - you can't fit a charger there).

Home charging is significantly cheaper than public charging.

The speed of home charging is largely irrelevant for most daily commute cases - you plug in when you get home and you've got, what, 13 hours at least before you have to leave the next morning? Even at 3kw, that's nearly 40kwh of charge, which on a decent EV is good for 200km or more.

It's a mindset shift away from how you manage resources in an ICE car. You don't wait for the reserve light before you head to a petrol station - you start every day with a full tank, and only head for a public charger if you're going to empty the tank completely in a single day.

Yes. There's a slight difference to the way you do it depending on battery chemistry.
Mine's LFP, so it charges to 100% every night, no worries.
The NMC ones you'll charge to 80% every night, and only charge to 100 when you're planning a long journey. The car software handles this for you.

Note that your fast chargers get decidedly unfast as the battery gets full... So if you want a 100% charge at a public charger you're gonna sit there a while.

Basically what I'm trying to figure out is this:

Bob does 900KM per month.
Currently, Bob's car uses just under 2 tanks for 900KM in town. It costs Bob around R 1500 per tank to fill-up, so lets round it at R2800 per month to do 900KM.

If Bob had an EV Like a Volvo EX30. What would it cost Bob to do 900KM, lets assume even with a slightly heavier foot to make it more real-world, assuming the car is only getting 380KM out of a full charge. That means Bob needs to charge the EV 2.3x to get the same mileage.

Is 2.3x the full charge of an EX30 more or less than R2800? That's why i'm trying to figure out as well...

I have a BMW IX3. Currently my consumption is about 18kwh/100km. If you home charge, costs are between R3 to R4 per kwh depending if you are below the 600kwh threshold or not. Public charging is about R6 for AC 11-22kw and DC fast chargers R7 per kWh.

You can work back and compare to ICE based on the consumption in L/100km. At R23 per Litre, my IX3 will be equivalent to an ICE car using 3.1L/100km on home charging and 5.47L/100km on a fast DC charger.

I also charge my car using my solar system. My car has travelled 26000km and used about R100 of electricity so far since I bought it new.
