Charities VS beggars

I love to give to charities each month, but recently I'm having some
issues giving to beggars. (Don't know why?)

What are your opinions about charities and giving to the homeless?

N.

Charities 40% eaten up by administration, 60% goes to cause (If you are lucky)

(Exception is Mandela childrens fund)

Beggers, 60% goes to SAB.

I avoid giving them anything...I don't see any improvement coming from it. On the beggar side it has to be food basically...if it ends up being invested in booze then I want to be the one drinking it.

Ask at your company's HR though. Recently found out that my company matches each Rand of charity 1:1 & guarantees nothing goes to admin costs etc (company administrated). I'm guessing most large companies have something similar.

At least they provide some inkling of a service. Don't really see what beggars provide in return.
If your buying a service then its not exactly charity. :p I can see how wikipedia can be kinda both though. :)

I dont give to beggars. It just encourages them to beg.

I support quite a few charities. All of them declare the amount of money that goes to admin and thats not such a bad thing IMO.

The one charity I support takes people off the street and rehabilitates them back into the community, the admin fee makes sure that the money I give is used effectively and helps actual people, not just buying food and handing it out.

Every now and then I get an email from them telling about a success story they have.

Man... I thought this was some sort of showdown, maybe over 12 3-minute rounds.

We give to charities etc every week. beggars can do something constructive to get money.

As said giving to beggars more often than not ends up spent on alcohol/gom/nastier drugs - and gives them incentive to keep begging. I've had beggars turn away food I offered as opposed to money - these are the worst.
Charities is better - money is always "risky", I rather buy blankets at PEP, dog and cat food, toys etc at Checkers and donate to SPCA / Animal welfare. At least these items is more unlikely to "go missing" than money

i stopped giving to charities years ago when a friend who owns a bakery did the cake for a high-profile wedding - which was paid for with a charity fund cheque :wtf:

i donate clothing and goods to SPCA, childrens homes etc

Yea, once the company I worked for at the time did a large amount of banners and other promotional media for a certain political party and we where paid with a NM Children's fund cheque.

Doesnt mean they don't do good work tho.

I dont give beggars money at all, Once there was a beggar that my Aunt offered a job to and she said no thanks i earn more begging, heard stories from my gf as well, she knows a beggar that drives a BMW m3 and has a huge house just from begging. So sure not all of the beggars use it to drink or buy drugs but i would guess a large portion does and even so these beggars that land up with nice houses from begging while not doing a proper job is just wrong.

Don't give anything to beggars, except food or sometimes during Christmas I buy toys and give it to the little children that have been dragged with their parents to beg.

As for charities, the ones I give to, I know at least one person who is involved in running them, so I am not hesitant about giving money, although if they can give me a list of what they need then its preferred.

I help out a homeless couple who I sometimes bump into by buying them food. I have at a push given them cash (they never asked), which has probably gone on booze, but that's maybe been once or twice.

After reading the post by one of the guys whose wife worked at a charity and finding out how much stuff gets stolen, I'd rather just cut out the middleman.

I donate to the SPCA becaust stray animals are reluctant to take cash from me :)

it's quite difficult to "ignore" these beggars on the street... We go to a specific shopping mall... and on the way there is like 9 homeless people waving their hands and doing their thing. Sometimes I feel bad not to give to them. Usually there are like 3 of them standing in one place... so when you give to one all the others want, etc.

I've just decided that I'm not going to support this anymore... its to much. But does this make you a "bad" person if you keep ignoring these folks?

Like I said, I'm a proud charity supporter not just one place but each time I like to give to different charities.
