South Africa's AI king

Despite the emergence of several competitors in generative artificial intelligence (AI) in recent years, OpenAI's ChatGPT continues to dominate as the preferred AI tool for tech-savvy South Africans.

In a poll of MyBroadband readers in April 2025, roughly 42% of respondents said they used ChatGPT, the most of any of the AI tools.

I’ve used it - but I quite like DeepSeek right now

Is that what the MyBB bots use to spit out the Businesstech and Daily Investor pieces...?

Grok3 is where it's at, anyone on ChatGPT still is just a laggard rather than an early adopter
Or not keen on a model trained with a hefty bias on Twitter data.

It's good, and the compute behind it is powerful and a strategic plus, but I feel like it can go off-piste way too fast for serious thinking work.

We have paid access to all significant LLMs through work, and ChatGPT and Claude are still the most consistent and reliable for general work. Agentic is where it is at right now, focussing on the performance of individual models is a red herring... switch out the model for the use case.

Although, I'm not using any of these platforms for coding; that's a totally different conversation.

Why would anyone limit themselves to just one? They are all pretty decent these days.

In terms of code, I'm finding Gemini 2.5 makes little mistakes and has an extremely large context window than deepseek, only rival I see come close is qwen. I can now concentrate on system design and worry less about writing bash scripts.
