I may need to replace my Netgear DG834 v3 router soon, it was a replacement from the older DG834 v2 model I had, but out of warranty now and I think it's acting up.

So I'm in the market for a new one possibly soon.

I'm not looking for a fancy router, in fact all I really need is PPPoE since I run mine through a VM running a Linux firewall distro.

I was thinking of something like http://www.take2.co.za/electronics-...net-usb-combination-modem-router-8925561.html

So ie: Looking for cheap, but not crap like Cnet, only needs 1x ethernet port, no wifi etc;

Any suggestions?

D-Link.. *shudder* Had way too many issues with their kit :P

i can beat all those :D

search for tenda in the pc hardware forums, you should pick up a thread i started a while back

bottom line, really good router for R399 which includes 4 lan ports, wi-fi and depending on the model usb as well. currently using the model with wi-fi and it rocks !

oh yeah the tenda's are lightning proof as well.

previously i had the d link 2500u and the billion bipac s (the pocket size one) both blew because of lightning, the tenda has been hit at least 4 times since i bought it and still going strong.

i still switch it off when there's a storm though just incase my luck runs out :D

ryu, lol - get some Clearline surge kids dude, got their protection on all our stuff, including the ADSL and we never turn off ;)

whats that ?

i got the surge plugs at home, paid R500 for a set of 3 i think but honestly they useless! blew my previous two router even with them on :(

I saw some ADSL2+ routers at Matrix for less than R500. Will check what brand they are.

billion

saw the same at the matrix here ... R299 or R399 for the pocket size ones i think there are the billion bipac 5000s or something

www.clearline.co.za - or look at APC Surge Arrest power strips with phone/adsl filter built in, the APC's are affordable, 5x 3pin plug power strips and best of all, no stupid reset switch! Can also be wall mounted. Remember that having a surge plug and not protecting the actual phone line won't help you very much.

Also if you have one PC protected, and another not and they're lanned, then obviously you're not properly protected, however that's no really an issue in a house with indoor lan cabling. But if you do have an external TV/amp hooked up to the PC, you want to surge protect all parts of the chain.
