some can be removed and used elsewhere, would those give better performance?

How is that the best of both worlds? They're freeing up a "useful data port" by reintroducing magsafe.

Magsafe the space that could be a USB port with removable or moveable magsafe insert. That way you get more ports when you travel and you can pick which side you charge from.

Apart from the magsafe you have USB-C ports on the new MBPs on either side, which means you can pick what side you choose from if you really want to, all you have to do is swap out the USB-C to MagSafe with USB-C to USB-C on the brick. No need for something as inelegant as an insert.
