My kids hog my phone sometimes and I won't be happy when I have to replace it due to a drop etc.
They tend to play educational games like ABC's, maths and drawing with the occasional fruit ninja/angry birds etc.

I need something @ +-R1500.
A nexus 7 would have been ideal but since I might end up having to buy 2(@ R2500 each) it becomes too expensive.
So here's what I need:
Expandable storage is a must if it does not have 32GB onboard
Screen not 800x400, I've seen that geeko tab it it is terrible
Being able to play mkv's a bonus.

You can always try those really cheap Kobo tablets from pnp, but they are really more for the dirt cheap category

Wouldn't the lowly resolution on those cheap tabs cause eye-strain if used for long periods?

The reviews that I've seen claim that the MSI Primo 81 uses the same LG screen used by the iPad mini:

Negatives are useless cameras, bad speaker positioning and battery life of about 5h.

I might get it for kids/browsing.

I'd rather have my kids have the best screen quality I can afford.

My kid uses iPad 3 so no issues there.
The wife has an iPad 2 he sometimes picks up but prefer him to use mine.

Then you can afford better screen quality than me :p
There's no way I'm buying them each a R6000 device at this age.

iPad 3 16gb + 3G was second hand at R3900 off BidorBuy.

Luckily enough my kid respects the thing, doesn't bash or drop it, yet.

So far the best sub R1000 tab I could find(after ordering the Lenovo of course) is this one: cube-u25gt

Processor 1.0GHz Dual-Core Rockchip RK3026 28nm Cortex-A9
Graphics Mali-400MP2
RAM 512MB
Storage 8GB
Resolution 1024×600

As soon as you approach the R2000+ mark, Google's Nexus blows everything away.

Case and point.

Today my 5 year old, very chuffed with herself, tells me she can now climb ON my car.

I keep my pose, (hiding the heart attack inside), and ask her how she does it?

Oh no, she does not need to climb on, she just jumps onto the bonnet.

So that expensive tablet is a definite no no at this age...
