Good article regaruing Local Loop Unbundling

Here is Telkom's official response:

"Telkom's position on local loop unbundling

While local loop unbundling will contribute to increased broadband penetration and competition we do not believe that it will contribute to an increase of investment in infrastructure.

In so far as the Second National Operator (SNO) is concerned, the telecommunications act already provides for their right to access Telkom infrastructure for a period of two years from their licensing and the necessary regulations have been made by ICASA.

The telecommunication act also provides that there shall be no local loop unbundling for the first two years of operation of the SNO."

in other words, up yours, we have legislation that protects our money mongering for another 2 years.......well, i smell blood and feeling a pounding in my chest that says only one thing... we lobby for a rapid change in that legislation....all in favour shout AYE...

I'm really fed up with Telkom always bringing up this Telecommunications Act to protect their own interests. Not surprising as that act was written for them in the first place!!!

All this talk about the convergence bill and Telecommunications act is really getting to me!!! This governement is SO hellbent on using regulations and laws and directives and "blah blah" to bring telecoms costs down that nothing is being PRACTICALLY done to actually reduce these costs. Liberalise the industry already!!!

Sometimes me gets the feeling it is the government actually holding us back, not just Telkom.

I like the reference to british telecom.

The bit they didnt tell you is that
1) british telecom has been privatised 100%
2) british telecom supplies lines, to everybody...isp's..other telco's AND BT INTERNET.

because british telecom (when they introduced adsl with bt internet were the same company) were split up by the telecoms regulator.

So, bt internet pays the same price to bt wholesale as any other isp does for lines. Hence, competition.

Bt wholesale owns 80% of the lines, sure, but they rent them out to all isp's (including themselves) at the same prices.

Unlike the situation we have here with Telkom... where Telkom (the VANS operator) "buys" lines directly from Telkom (the network operator). This scenario is SO pathetic just saying it makes me sick.

does anybody know how to get a bill passed in government....If we say, write a piece of legislation and then get it passed in parliament - we would have to lobby all the Members, certainly but does the piece of legislation have to be put forward by a member of parliament of can anyone present this to the house?

in other words they themselves openly ADMIT to the benefits of competition and broadband penetration, they threaten not having anything to do with infrastructure. are these people so hellbent on putting their own selfish needs of making money ahead of the greater good of the country?

and i too am tired of them quoting the telecommunications act, which was written to protect them. even when the convergence bill is released, these wankers will still be quiting the old telecommunications act.

Seems to be one of telkoms standard responses these days.

Not a problem. I feel that Telkom should be encouraged to reduce expenditure.

Provided that their income can be reduced by an integral multiple of the reduction and that the first expenditure reduced is that of the top eight levels of salary grades.

At least they "warned" this time. Last time Steve White made that statement with the ICASA report, almost every political party was on their back with the "bully tactics" comments.

Its the same statement, just worded so it doesn't seem like they are making a demand.. now its just a threat
