I picked up one of these yesterday for a bargain - €100 nearly new
There's like a thousand of these similar models around, so you need to do a bit of research because not all of them are specced as advertised. Some reputable models are Vankyo, Topvision, Vivibright. A lot of the times the specs they advertise are meaningless anyway - they throw around lumens like popcorn. You need to find some YouTube reviews that can tell you what's really going in in more subjective terms. Banggood and Massdrop and Aliexpress have tons of them for sale.
I was just curious to see how well it would perform for the price considering that for €100 you can't get a decently sized secondhand LCD TV. My experience - it's phenomenal value and well worth getting if it's something that can work for you.
Firstly the trade-offs: this is clearly not a premium projector so don't go in there thinking you're going to get daylight viewing or automatic keystone correction or silent operation or OLED colours. It is what it is - you stick a Chromecast or Apple TV or Switch in there and make sure it's more or less parallel to your viewing surface, and attach some speakers loud enough to drown out the fan, fiddle a bit with the keystone adjustments, blackout the curtains, and you'll be golden.
I'd say the lack of keystone adjustment could be a deal-breaker for this model. It can do about 15% comfortably before the edges start to get fuzzy. In my case it's fine because it will sit on a shelf on top of our bed when we move in the new house. There are some cheap models that offer better keystone - actually the next version up from mine does (T26K vs T26L). Just make sure you know what you need.
The fan noise is noticeable if the volume isn't high, but it disappears pretty quickly if you have speakers on. It could bother you if you're the type to be bothered by such things. I don't know how to measure decibels but it's probably the volume of someone saying sssshhhhhh all the time.
The viewing experience - it's really impressive. Obviously the whole reason to get a projector instead of a TV is because of the size of the screen. In this case the screen is 210cm diagonally with the projector sitting on the foot of my bed, probably around 200cm from the wall. I think in our new house it will be another 1 - 1.5 metres from the wall and probably around 100". It's not possible to change the width of the screen, which is ok. It's just a great experience, 1080p is fine for a bedroom TV. The image quality is great, of course not close to an OLED or something like that, but again it's all about the price. I don't even have a screen for it yet, and it just doesn't matter that much.
It does wash out in the daylight of course. We have blackout blinds that help a lot. I would not recommend it for a living room TV option, but in a bedroom or entertainment room where you can control the light it's perfect. Although if I was going to build a cinema room I would opt for something pricier and short-throw.
Also playing games is fine, there's no noticeable input lag on the Switch, and I had an amazing time playing for a couple of hours this morning.
The point of the thread is, if you're considering one of these Chinese projectors, or you're looking for a budget option for a new TV, one of these is a great option. The value for money is insane and they are legit. And I'm looking forward to hauling it into the back garden and braaing in summer while watching a movie.
